Hello Hetal and Mothers with bottle-feeding experience,
I m a working person, in India. My 5m old baby is on breastfeed + bottle feed + semisolids. She prefers bottle to breast but is many times accepting bf nicely.
The problem
Most times, when the bottle-feeding starts she does not take it peacefully. While sucking, the baby sighs and fidgets and throws hands wanting to hold something eagerly, if i offer my fingers she holds them tight. Her capacity is 6 ounces, but sometimes she goes till 4 and fidgets so much that she leaves feeding. Other times, she continues till 6 ounces while fidgeting and sighing.
I assume that baby has had her full, when she stops sucking bottle and starts moving the nipple with her tongue within mouth and starts cooing/playing.
As mentioned above, she sometimes does this after 3 ounces, sometimes after 4 and sometimes after 6. But all the times, she has been sighing and fidgetting.
Once it happened that she left bottle at 4 ounces (out of 6) and i felt she was done. I burped her and was playing with her as she was lying down in bottle-feed position. 5 mins later I casually offerred her bottle with remaining milk and she started sucking it again and finished it.
I see her doing this always while bottle feed, but never during breastfeed.
She only sighs, fidgets, moves her body a lot, is uneasy. Doesnt cry.
-Is anything wrong with her?
-When she leaves feed at 3/4 ounces, my maid gives her remaining ounces with bowl and spoon. Is it ok to feed her like this forcefully?
-Baby is fine healthwise and weightwise, reached her milestones of 5m, But HAS LITTLE COLD. Wheezes many times a day, nothing else in Cold. She is having this since 3-4 weeks, doesnt come down/aggravate.
-Assuming baby does that due to blocked nose, why doesnt she do it while breastfeed?
- its not that she perfers breastfeed. She perfers bottle, and is okie-dokie with breast.
Please help.

Hetal replied. at first, even if her capacity nd normal feeds are of 6oz,,its not necsry that she would have that everytime or say finish the feed,,esp at 5months.dont expect your baby to finish the feeds,,,and avoid offerng the same bottle again,,just because she didnt take that feed,,or left it halfway !
check on her gums, if at all they are hard, swalln, or reddsh, pinksh, she is gettng ready to start teethng.
other i see is she is gettng ready for solids...she is 5months, and when babies are ready for solids and needs something MORE than formula,,they feel disinterstd with drinkng lots of fluid.which makes her feel frustratd with liquid diet,,so makes them play with nipple.
can you check on the nipple of bottle,,see if it needs to be changed !
can you read below post to make sure whther she is not suffrng from gas or is not havng ne other probs of colic, vomits, colic, reflux or gas :
http://www.indiaparenting.com/boards/showmessage.cgi?messageid=6873&table_name=dis_feeding
please understand that now that she is 5months, you cant expect her to accept the whole and sole liquid diet.
and since she is doing this with formula only and not during bf session,,she seems to be feeling heavy with formula. its quite normal, dont expect your bf/bm baby to complete the full feed of formula,,with full feed in all days..remember that bm doesnt give all the nutrients that formulagives,,esp formula has milk solids that makes them feel heavy,,bm has natural human milk which is lighter than formula !
mild cold is normal in winter,,do as below to avoid ne cold attacks:
http://www.indiaparenting.com/boards/showmessage.cgi?messageid=1699&table_name=dis_healthissues
if wheezng or mild sneezng, is accompanied by watery eyes, your baby might be sufferng from some airborne or chemical allergies,,that are caused due to chemicals, fragrances or lints, dry air due to continuos hot air from heater,,so check on below, see if the wheezng is stopped :
http://www.indiaparenting.com/boards/showmessage.cgi?messageid=5760&table_name=dis_feeding
ne increase in episodes of cold or stuffy nose/blocked nose, please ask your dr. soothe her with warm mist humidifier to avoid blocked nose..
to clear blocked nasal passges,, you can use infant saline drops to clear/thin out the mucus and thn with nasal aspirator or suction bulb, remove the mucus,,check the colour of mucus,,any colour in mucus, shows that your baby needs some dr or otc medication related to cold or allergy.check the below post about mucus from nose :
unless your baby is sneezing continuously for every second or min,,its not a matter of worry..when he sneezes, check for quality of mucus..if mucus is colourless and with ordinary consistency as he does normally then nothing to worry,,if the mucus is blackish or has some colour,,it might be the sign of some dust or house borne allergy or if too thick with crystals then a sign of cold of sinus. however sinus is not much seen in kids below 1 year. !
a sneeze once a day or twice,,after face wash, or bath or after meals,,once a while is ok !
no mucus, with sneeze is a sign that his nose is working properly :)),
its nothing but sneezing to lil unseen particles that might be trying to intrude in hs body thru nose !
i want you to keep an eye on her wght,,if at all her wght seems to be decreasng and that she is not interestd in feed or starts decreasng her feeds,,she needs to be seen by your dr immediately..check her temperatures,,make sure she does not catch fever, along with cold,,,could be the sign of flu ! so be carefull,,this is just the right season to catch one,,so avoid nething that warms her body temperature,,than required.,at the same time,,keep her covered...
also, when mother is having mild cold or cold nature body,,her baby is likely to keep wheezng ! so if at all you have a mild cold,,take some home remedy like ginger-honey or turmeric milk and see if it helps your mild inner cold to clear and if that makes your baby cold go away !
finally,,please make sure she drinks on an approx as below :
http://www.indiaparenting.com/boards/showmessage.cgi?messageid=1096&table_name=dis_milestones
thats all i can see of all mentioned...
a very good luck to you.
