I've had an ectopic Sept 05 and just found out yesterday that I am pregnant again! That's how I came about your question, as I was wondering what the chances are of the pregnancy being ectopic again. It looks like most agree that 50% of previous ectopics will fall pregnant again, and only 20% of those is likely to have another ectopic pregnancy. I don't want to be over confident, but I'm not going to be negative either, so here's hoping for the best!!

Hi Clair,

In my case had an ectopic in july 02. Delivered a healty baby boy in 0ct 03 and then in aug 05 a baby girl. I had to undergo major surgery and lost a tube. But doctors could not find a reason other than fate to explain it. If u can find it well and good if not hope for the best. If you lose one tube, yes u'r chances are reduced by half. but it is not impossible. I also know 2 people who have ahd 2 kids after an ectopic. Do not want to scare you but also know somebody who had an ectopic twice and lost both the tubes. So it depends. If you think you might be pregnant again do an ultra sound immediately and make sure it is not an ectopic. Actually there are alot of people who have had babies after an ectopic.

So good luck. Be brave and Pray.

Dear Clair,
It's better to address this concern to your OB.
It won't be that each time you are unfortunate. Ectopic pregnancy may not repeat and you can have as many as 85-90% chances of leading a healthy pregnancy for next time around.
What weighs these possibility is the reason you have had an ectopic pregnancy. If your previous ectopic pregnancy was a result from some infection to tube or blockage to tube, that led embryo not to get into uterus and continue develop in fallopian tube then you need to assure that another the tubes are perfectly fine and there is nothing wrong today (an HSG would help answer this concern). If above was not the reason then you are going to expect a healthy pregnancy. Talk to your Dr.

What stage your ectopic pregnancy was resolved? Was it by medication, laproscopic surgery or by major surgery in which you would loose a tube in which the embryo was developing. If you have lost a tube while resolving pregnancy then you have 50% chances of conception (technically 10% chances because with 2 tubes each healty couple has 20% chances of coception).

In case you lost a tube in last ectopic pregnancy and have blocked tubes then you can go for IVF and get fertilized embyro directly injected into uterus and expect a healthy pregnancy.

I think you will need a pelvic ultrasound and may be USG before trying to conceive.

When to start is also a topic you will discuss with your Dr.

I have provided information that might help you and your spouse to understand what to expect, finally you will add knowlege of your case from your OB and get into process.

Archie
