Name: worried mom

Hi Hetal & others,

My baby is 10 months old & he is active & likes to play with his toys all the time. But he is not able to stand even holding things. If i make him to stand he stands for 30 secs & starts to jump & wants to sit. Please suggest something to make him stand. I am really worried because by 10 months atleast he must be able to stand holding things.

I live in US & now i am in India for vacation. My baby was ok for 1week, then started to get fever,diahreah,allergy.... When we made urine culture test he was having urinary infection & now he is in medication - Injection for 10 days. How common is urinary tract infectionfor babies? What should i do to prevent futher infections? If he'll be ok if i return to US? Please help.

Is it ok if my baby is not able to pick food & eat by himself. He keeps everything in his mouth except food. He likes to eat everything in paste texture. If i give him piece of idly he doesn't want to eat? How to make him eat?

Please help..

Thanks,
mom.

may be the names might be slightly diff,,but the actual tests remain same,,one of them might be more or less,,,dpnding on what you dr feels the need..
just ask your dr about the possible abnormalities, and tell him that you wouldnt mind it doing,,
and he will list you the names at your country and might refer a good lab agency or hospital for the same...!

your dr will suggest you these test if he feels the need, after your acceptance,,,ONLY after the total recovery of your baby. please note that these test are done when the baby is doubted to have the Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR),Urinary obstruction or Dysfunctional voiding..otherwise not.

to check the abnormalities in the urinary tract,,your dr may recommend you further to have these test :::

Kidney and bladder ultrasound,Voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG),Intravenous pyelogram,Nuclear scans,Computed tomography (CT) scans and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)....

all these things are taken care by your dr depending on the severity of this infection,,,and can be done only after the recovery of this infection,,,,

so like sona said,,worth a query with your dr and to be on safe side,,do tell your dr that you wouldnt mind going for it,,if that ensures safety of your baby...all after recovery....
good luck.

Subject:  standing, urinary track infections,,fingerfoods..

when to worry about standing :
--> at 12 months, can't stand with support..
so as of now, 30sec standing 1t 10months,,,is not bad..motivate him with diff standing toys which he can stand, support and play,,also,,place diff furniture near-2-near nd place the toy he badly wants to play with,,on each furniture...he wants to jump, which means he is showing signs that he doesnt know to walk,,at the same time as a human instinct,,his body tries to walk that way,,so teach him,,,hold his hands and make him take his first steps...support him well and as soon as you see his interest is developed,,he will try to do it by himself...table games which makes him stand and play will work great for him,,,,,this wil further make him practise his standing skills and walking skills...kids get excited by every milestones they achieve and they want to be fast or just do away with it,,we have to convert their these excited energies into patience and proper learning....

about urinary tract infections : girls are more likely to get it compared to boys,,esp towards the age 1.
the ratio of the infected girls is to boys is around 3-8 : 1-3boys,,,in their early childhood..however, most urinary infections are not much worry and easy to treat,,,but its the untreated ones that cause permanent kidney damage and kids under 2 years of age are more likely to serious damage..since your baby is already in treatment,,do as your dr tells you and complete the dosage and take him to dr and make sure he has completely recovrd out of the infection....so that he is out of ne risk if involved...
also note that this infection being a bacterial infection,,could be a sign that is primary or what we call early sign of something wrong with your baby urinary tract/bladder/kidneys. i dont want to scare you on this, but just a possibility,,,and keep an eye on your ne thing/functions related to his stomach, liver, kidneys,,,probs like awful urine smells, extremly smelly bowels, stomach upsets, indigestion, vomitting, unexplained diareaaaa, or throwups,,sudden lack of apetite,,,and such others in the coming future !!
around on an average,,45% of babies who had these infections had diff problems related to bladder and kidneys...
mostly these medications given in such infections are to be given even after the baby recovers in first few days,,until its totally gone..if not, these bacteria will keep producing causing severe other infections,,making your baby severe..

to prevent,,there is not much we can do,when there is case where some babies are just prone to urinry infections,,but we ca try to minimize the risk or wat we call as intensity of the infection,,here are some tips,,,
1.give your baby diet that has lots of fluids,,the more baby will drink, the more urine he will pass,,flushing all the possible reasons of growth of bacteria...good liquid intake is good for healthy kidney, stomach and digestive tracks as well..
vit C increases the acidity level of urine which in turn helps decrease the number of harmful bacteria that may be present in your urinary tract system.so its highly recommended that diluted juices like orange, mosambi,,cranberry are very helpful..

2.make sure your baby is never constipated,so high fibre diet is recomnded,,the more fibre, the regular will be the bowels and so will be the digestive tracks,,,also ensuring clean tracks,,as they will flush out pretty frequently..whole grains,,lots of freshly cooked vegetables,,lots of fibre fruits,,ensure good fibre intakes,,

3.if you are still offering your bm or bf,,,,keep doing it,,breastfeed babies develop strong immune because of bm,,when it comes to these types of infections...

4.avoid harsh soaps, give her wipe bath until your baby recovers and until your baby is 5 years of age, avoid scented soaps or wipes...
your baby has been given injections because he was havin a severe infection so be very careful...

5. try giving him boiled water esp if you are in a country where water pollution is quite a common prob....

the possibility that after returning to US, your baby is fine might be one !!
in india,,,there are lots of problems like pollution,,clean water,,high polluted air around baby and hygine standards around the atmosphere are not as per other countries,,however,,if these are the reasons that your baby got this infection,,he will recover after a week in US,,,otherwise,,if at all,,this infection is caused by ne other reasons like personal hygiene(taken care by mother),,his own health issues like malfunction of ne of the organs like kidney, bladderss or ne sign of other complication coming on your way,,thn he will have it in US as well !!!!! its difficult to predict right now,,as to what might have caused your baby to have this infection,,right now...

6.wiping your baby bottom with a clean wipe,or a good water wash, and then drying it by a gentle touch with a 100% cotton towel,,often minimzes the risk of these kind of infections,,,as the area remains well cleaned and dry..if in india,,using a dettol wipe or 100% cotton cloth dipped in 2-3drops of dettol(in 5cups of water),,often helps..

7.also note that uncircumcised baby boys, are more likely to get urine infection as the germs may grow under the foreskin from the drops of urine itself,,however it happens quite rare,,but with series of infections seen among these boys,,the drs had adviced to get circumcised...so that your dr will tell you, if at all he sees ne such possibility...
8.frequent diaper change,,often prevents the grwth of bacterias....or making your baby wear 100%cotton underwear will help in future to avoid ne such infections...

thats all i have for you,,most of urine infections are cured in a week or so,,with proper care and treatments,,and recurrences are common for certain children,,,dpending on all factors that i talked above...

if you see ne of below signs,,take your child to your dr immediately,,,:
1.ne discoloured urine, bloody or extremely smelly..
2. a fever above 100,,and baby looking tired and fatigue,,
3.lots of urination in night time compared to daytime or visa versa,,instead of his regular wet diapers..vomits,,or seems to be irritable and hates tummy time, even after recovery...
4.2 – 3 attacks within 6 months,,make sure to make a note of each urinary infection your baby had along with the symptoms he had shown for each of the uti attacks,,so that if at all its an early sign or symptom of ne other complication,,it can be easily diagonsed by your dr..
when you come to US, make sure to keep all the prescrbtns and medical records of all your indian dr visits,,and let your US dr see the reports and at your well child check up here in US,,ask your dr to comment on it ! grill your dr on it,,ask him all the psibillites and risk...

now about baby finger foods,,,well, its ok for babies to take a while with textures,,remember its for a mother to make sure she gives enough time for her baby to accept new texture but at the same time,,,keep trying the new texture,,,respect your baby preferencs,,in textures, flavours, at the same time, keep trying and offering various meals in diff times,,to check whether he is ready or not,,,to make him eat, and al,, there are many things i wrote in prev post just below yours,,please go thru diff ideas and posts of dif babies and keep trying..trying is the only key and the master key is to try to graduate him..if he is fine with paste texture, throw in some lumps, and see how he reacts,,,
also check my post to preeti, dated 2006-10-12,,with subject-dear hetal, need your advice,,,its on this same page,,lots of tips therein too....just omit the foods that you have not startd yet for your baby,,also check all my posts, followups to shilpa patil, starting from 2006-10-05,with subject help me hetal,,lots of things therein too.

so i think,,thats should be all,,and there is nothing to worry,,,
keep me updated about your lil prince !
take care, you have a good time..

his developments are good.
complete the antibiotics given by your dr,,and i would advice you to take your baby once the medcines are over,,and ask your dr about the test that sona and i talked about,,see his reaction to it...after recovery,,its advisable to ask your dr about it.
as far as he is passing urine time by time, i m not worried,,keep an eye on it,,if he is not comfortable giving a wet diaper,,keep him with out diapers,,or whatever he prefers..infact without diaper,,he will remain dry thn sticked to same thing that is not good hygne wise,..

a mild constipation, stomach upset, is norma with dose of antibiotics,,if he doesnt like water, give him fresh juices, like i mentioned in earlier post..coconut water shouldnt be concern for 10month old,,just make sure its not refrigerated and because u are in india i guess, so fresh green coconuts are avaiable,,just store in cool dry place,,and offer your child it every day,,,
you arent having enough supply, which explains why he himself wasnt bf,,thn nothing much we can do,,
you are doing all fine,,if the aveeno baby soap or the lotion that you are using a SCENTED one, thn avoid using it,,it will be good to prevent future infection,,,,replace with ne unscented creme or soap or those made for senstive skin,,if at all your stay in india is more thn 1month or so,, you can try the indian brands by asking your dr about ne good brand,,,and if at all you are going to come back in a month or so,,after coming to US, stop the scented brands for your baby...

rest all is fine,,,take care,

Hetal,

Thanks for ur detailed reply..My baby now stands with support for 1 to 2 min. But he leans on that(puts his body weight on the things he is holding) Is it ok? My baby now tries to crawl, In sitting position he tries to crawl, but when he goes to crawling position he puts body on he floor,he is not able to lift his body & is not able to be in crawling position, if i give lift to his body or help him he starts to cry..

UTI- Has finished his 10 injections.. My doc prescribed some antibiotics to continue for another 15 days.
Abt urine - he pees little by little (i dont use diapers at home - in India)when he is out of diapers..But when put him some trowsers or something he is ok..May be he is not used to be out of diapers. Is he ok with the pee? Sometimes he get colored urine & his urine smells & not that bad. So do ihave to put him on diapers?

Abt poo: He was ok with the poo before injection. During the injection period he was little bit constipated. What foods can i give him to avoid constipation. He doesn't like to drink water. What other liquids can i give him? My doc suggested to give tender coconut, fresh carrot & apple juice? Is it ok to give tender coconut to 10 month baby.

I am BF him only in the night. I stopped feeding him 3 weeks bak in the morning becoz he was not that much interested in BF.

I am using aveeno baby soap which i brought from US. Is it fine to use that soap & also i am using aveeno cream applying in his body.
Yes i am giving him mineral water filtered & boiled.

Please point me if i am doing anything wrong..

Thanks,
mom
