Hi HETAL ,

My son turned 1 and i have switched from formula to whole milk . I buy 3.25 % homogenized milk as suggested by all . I have a question do we need to boil this milk like we do in india or should i just heat it for a minute in microwave.

personally i recommend boiling the milk.
I would like to be on safer side when it comes to giving it to my baby.
Once you open the bottle, and keep using from the same can, it comes in contact with surrounding air, thus the effect of pastuerization is not the same and nor is its freshness,,,.

it doesnt matter even if its just 1 min that took you to pour the milk from that can,,bacteria easily enters milk in that time !
bacterial growth is possible even in low temperatures,,only thing is its growth rate is lower compared to high temperatures/room temperatures....
if this kind of milk is given,it can be dangerous for baby but not to adults.adults digestive system is matured enough to deal with those bacteria and a perfect human adult body has immune strong enough to flush out such bacterias thru bowels. which is just not the case with toddlers...

many infants have got gastric problems and infections as soon as cows milk was started and that milk was not boiled... even though mothers claimed that it was fresh and due date was way far from the day they offered milk to their babies... Therefore boiling each time is a best option when it comes to baby to make sure that you are giving something thats totally safe !
it has been my personal experience that milk curdled in the can itself, lying in fridge,,some 8-9 days before its expiry date,,even though it was just the second time i was using it !!
if pastuerized milk was that safe to drink and was so fresh,, this curdling should not have happened !! this simple experience eliminates my chances of trusting the canned milk.it has happened more than twice even before i got pregnant with my first baby..sometimes the milk even smells badly 2-3days prior to expiry...i would not trust the purity of this kind of milk..
now its upto you to decide what you want to give to your baby.even though unusual to hear, many american, mexican families including my family have practised boiling milk until their toddlers were 2 years of age & many ped have recommended it on asking...
so you decide...
Good Luck

Hi Ritu ,

Thanks for replying .Also Thanks a lot hetal..your advice always matters . Thanks .
Regarding milkshakes what i did was i took around 1-2 strawberries to start with and put around 4-5 ounces of milk and blend in blender . Same way with a slice of mango with same quantity milk etc...for banana i give around 3/4 with that quantity.
Hope this helps.
