Feeding:Not Eating Well

Hi All,

My baby is 8 months old.He is premature by a month(Born one month before the Expected Delivery Date).
He was on brestfeeding till 5th month. As i need to go to work i started feeding him Bottle milk. From that time he was not having milk properly. He started drinking very less milk.Per day only 400 - 450 ml from 5th month onwards.
Now i started giving him cerelac and Farex with milk.Still he does not take more quantity. He is not having cerelac with thick consistency. He has Cerelac only if its liquid as milk.So i mix it with milk and give him.He has not started chewing. He does not drink by Bottle also.So i am giving him with spoon or paladai. If i force him and feed he is vomitting. He is only 6.5 kg.He is active and doing well. But he is lean.Doctor says he is underweight. But does not have any complications.Doctor tells me to increase the amount of solid foods. But if i force him to eat more he just vomits.I am helpless. Please help me.

Regards
Jaya

Hi Minx,SR and all,

First of all thanks for ur concern and reply.I tried Ragi. But not the way u did.I have time constraint.so i bought the ragi Powder from outside. It was prepared the same way u said(sprouted and grinded well). He had not hated it.But he was having that also about the same amount as cerelac.Maybe i try to prepare the same at home the way u did and see whether that helps.I feel he may not like the branded food(Processed one) so i will try to prepare at home. Please share any home made food recipes u know.

I tried the Expressing milk and give for him.But my office hours were long(from morning 9 to evening 7).So i thought i will stop nursing and feed him only formula. So i stopped nursing.

I have to be patient till he learns to eat in thicker consistency. But is that Okay? Even after 8 months will babies does not know to eat solid foods?

Thanks again

Hi ,

Why don't you try Raagi ? It has iron and calcium and when cooked with milk it has fats too. And of you soak and grind and strain it everyday, the consistency will be smooth not like cerelac - your baby may like that. You can start with dilute like milk consistency and then slowly thicken it up.

Keep in mind that this is time consuming and not instant like cerelac. I generally remove stones, soak overnight. Grind and strain in the morning. In Evening , I add some milk and crystal sugar ( kal-kanda in tamil ) and go on stiring on low flame till it cooks giving a nice aroma - but don't cook too much as your baby may not like thick consistency.

Let me know if you try this.

Doc knows best
I found out the hard way that each baby is different. My doc had advised me to start external food at 4 months but it just dint suit him till he was 6 months
I know many babies start eating when they are 4 months.
Even now my baby has his preferences
try different things till you find something that suits him an give very less quantity first time and gradually increase.
have you tried expressing your milk?
