After reading your experiences, I really don't want to take my son to India. I really don't know what to do with him. Its not only with the babies, when I used to go to India I would get very sick with fever, vomiting etc.

I have asked many docs here whether or not to have any injections for my son to specially prevent him from all this. But they all say that as long as he is updated on his immunization, its ok. There is no safe injections which they can give him.

Please do provide some more tips on travelling to india with babies?

Can anyone please tell me the vaccination name so that I can ask for that injection for my son? My husband thinks its no prob. to take him to india as according to him, there are babies who are born there and live there without any problems. But he does not understand that our baby was not born in India. He is even planning to leave my son with my in-laws in India.
I will never let him do that.

Oh my God, does somebody has good experience with taking baby to India? We are planing to go with our 5 month old son in November. I am reading your experience and I have just night mares from it. It looks like it is just not good idea to take small kids to India. I am getting him vacinated specially for this trip. All needed vacination plus antimalaric tablets - do somebody has experience with antimalaric tablet for such a small one? How is the reaction? Do you have good or bad experience?
we are planing to take our own travel bed and everything what he will use from here. I will bath him in bottled water. Already told in family nobody can touch him, except grandparents sure. We are taking special desinfection for things he will put in his mouth. I am fully breast feeding so he will not have any drinks and food there. What else I can do more? Some more suggestion? And for how long did you be there? We are going just for 14 days, that chances of infection are samller.

Hi Nikita
I took my 6 mo. old to India in last winter & had a terrible experience with infective Dirrhea..diaper rashes & bad cold. All three were interrelated as Ist leads to 2nd & 2nd to 3rd.
We did talked to our pedia.before going & he told us to carry many a over the counter medicine for fever, cold, conjestion + pedilyte. Nothing special. I mean any vaccine etc. & did say that you have docs. in India, in case of need consult them.
My problem asrises because at that time my daughter was teething and she was putting every thing in mouth. I took her there for firt time so I was not able to stop all our relatives from holding her & stopping them to shower their love(how they do .. you know). She was putting everybodies sari.... duppatta whatever getting, in her mouth. Secondlly she use to lick the water when I wash her face. I guess that was the culprit. Because for drinking & eating purpose I took water from here( from store you can get baby water in samll convenience packs. I took plenty like diapers. But for her bath I used the regular tap water & she liked that. For sure I know that wher it happened. When I came here & shared my experience with one of my friend , she said that she always use Bottled water(sold in India) atleast to wash baby's face while giving her bath. & thats how she could save her baby. Had i guessed it earlier I would have definetly used the boiled water for her face washing.
*Try to avoid mosquitos whatever way you can.
*Keep handy the name, no.& address of a good Doctor from the place you are going(ask your relative to find out one for you). Thats the last tip.
Hope I did not make you feel nervous. It is just to give you an idea.
All the best.
Kavitaprasad.

hi nikita,
i agree to the comments you have recd from your friends. my baby fell very ill there when i travelled to india , she was 9 mths then.
call up the cdc (center for disease control). they will tell yuo what shots are neccessary. usually for a 12 mths old, they don't suggest much. but you can call your child's pediatrician and find out.
i had given my baby an immunoglobulin shot (safety sake for jaundice) tho' she ahd already got the hep shots 2 of them. the immuno. glo is to bring up immunity. children born here have less immunity to the illnesses in india dn tend to fall sick easily. make sure your baby gets an mmr atleast 1 mths befroe departure b'coz it takes 3 weeks for the anti-bodies to form and work.
also keep in mind that your baby has not got a shot of bcg (th t.b.shot given in india to kids).
so avoid crowded places.

1.avoid water, thats for sure. even any ice foods. that whatever is not boiled.
2. avoid milk sweets, a very big carrier of gastro problems.
3.carry pedialyte pouches in case of emergency.
4.carry all the baby's med like tylenol, etc
5.carry tylenol suppositorry (in case your baby has a case of vaommitimg and can't take by mouth).

i hope this was of help to you. i'll write more tips as and when i remember them.
