Hetal replied. keep trying.. it will take him couple a months more to master his sucking skills continuosly...
Some babies enjoy a sippy as early as 5 or 6 months, and others aren't interested until after their first birthdays. Most babies seem ready around 7 to 9 months, though. but this doesnt mean they will drink from it continuoously,,this the time of their start when they actually start sucking from sippy cup...their mouth muscles and tongue are not yet strong enough to continue sucking continusouly..however, it dpends on babies individually.
Some babies take to a sippy cup immediately; others take a while to get used to the idea that they have to keep sucking it hard to get the liquid out of it.. Here are some tips on making the transition easier:
1.Start off with a soft, pliable, nipplelike spout, which will feel more familiar to your baby than a hard plastic spout. these days, the markets offer very nice transitional spouts that has different levels of liquid flow to fit your baby sucking ability. try changing the flow of liquid, often looking to your child preferences about flow of liquid.
3.Give it some time. Until your baby masters the maneuvers, you may want to put only water in the cup. When he shakes or throws it, even a sippy might not keep purple grape juice from hitting the carpet.,,
4.Don't worry if your baby doesn't use the sippy cup properly for a while. It makes a fine toy, too! let him play with it,
5.Try different models until you find one that suits your baby. sometimes, with other brands, due to their valve mechanism, babies have felt comfortbale drinking in it and continued them !Some cups have valves that are so effective at keeping the liquid from spilling that children really have to work to get a drink.that might frustrate your baby and he will never drink from it ! even if once he is frustrted,,they remember the things that annoy them, very well..
6.Encourage your child to use a regular cup when you think he's ready,,and offer it always first than bottle ! esp when he is badly hungry for milk feeds,,,some babies started drinking that way,,it dpends though,,might be taxing for you as your baby will cry for bottle..
7. offer sippy cup at every part of feeds, every part of meals or snack...offer with his fav juices, a bit cooler liquids, being summer, not cold liquids,,,babies sometimes like to continue drinking if the liquid is cool and refreshes them :) in heat.
8. some have tried this one and succeeded this way - Instead of a sippy cup with the spout, teach him to drink from a regular cup first. The spout is to much like the bottle and he is confused because he cannot suck. Give him just a little juice and slowly show him how to do it. He will see you drink and he will try to copy your movement. After he learns to drink and swallow, re-introduce the sippy cup,,and he will understand that this is differnt that bottle !
some moms have bought transitional nipples that are like sippy cup spout, available in market, for easy transition ! they too have workd...
and finally, after all that tricks and tips,,there comes a point where we have to just wait for our baby to be ready for it ! it dpends on him as well, your baby will drink only when he is comfortable & masters the skill...being a mom, we have to just keep trying.
good luck

Very rightly said Hetal...
I kido is 6.5 months.. She drinks water from sippy cup. But she is very much moody... She drinks only when she wants...
Should i try to give water other ways also or just keep trying sippy cup.

Ruchi
