Bowel and Bladder Movements:constipation
2004-04-12
Name: rita

hi,
My baby is 5 and a half months old. She has not pooped for a week and cries every night due to gas.

She is only on breast milk and prunes for a week.

We had started Rice cereal mixed with breast milk 2 weeks back, but discontinued that since it had resulted in no poop.

I live in the U.S

thanks for your help.

Rita

Hi Rita

When my son suffered from constipation, I gave him teaspoon of prune juice mixed with water and that worked for him. You also need to give your baby plenty of boiled cooled water.

Hi Rita,

I remember when my son was 4-5 months old and was being exclusively breastfed, the ped told me that breastfed babies sometimes have a bowel movement once a week. Check with the ped.

If you think the baby is uncomfortable with gas, you can try the following -
- Soak raisins in water. Once they soften, squeeze the juice and give it to baby.
- Lie baby on her back, hold her legs, and do a very gently cycling motion.
- Place index and middle fingers an inch or two below the navel and do a light circular motion. It can help relieve constipation. A description of this method is given in the book \";What to Expect in the First Year\";.

If you think it is the rice cereal, then give it very dilute. One teaspoon cereal dissolved in 4 teaspoon liquid.
Gradually increase the thickness.

Good luck.

I don't think you need to worry. But you definitely need to address this concern to your pediatrician as soon as possible. They know better. Don't worry I think it is very normal.

RE:bowel movement in 2 week old infant
Some babies go through phases when they either can't use the muscles to empty their bowels or they "forget how to". In that case, it's safest keep using the suppositories daily to make them do a dirty in 5 minutes.... - Su 03 [View Message]
RE:where can I get laxative?
You can get either glycerin or bisacodyl suppositories in any Indian pharmacy - I recommend saving money by not buying child-size ones, instead cutting adult supps in half to make a child-size dosage.
(I have a daughter with long-term bowel issues: she can't "do" without them!)... - Su 03 [View Message]
RE:constipation
When the baby is in discomfort from constipation (especially if she hasn't done some dirty for two days or more), the first thing you should give is a glycerin suppository.... - Su 03 [View Message]
RE:hi
Most doctors say banana doesn't help - the potassium in it makes constipation worse. Remember you can make your own prune puree in a blender. Grape, grapefruit and papaya are also laxative fruits. And remember you can safely use baby suppositories as often as you need to (they also help with "training" the baby to do a dirty at the same time every day)... - Su 03 [View Message]
RE:Baby Movements/Development
Consult a good doctor immediately as this should not be ignored as it will cause a big issue if you let it go now, please seek doctors advice on immediate basis.... - Aditi [View Message]
RE:Baby Movements/Development
Hi there please be calm and relax as it happens sometime the child takes little time to start walking or crawling also but in your case the child should have started crawling if not walking.... - Anita [View Message]
