Feeding:Thumb/ finger sucking problem of 3.5 mths old baby
2006-05-11
Name: Ami

hi

my baby is 3.5 mths old and has suddenly developed a habit of thumb and finger sucking.
Some people told me that it is because she is hungry, but She does it frantically not just when she is hungry but even after a full stomach.

I tried using mits on her hands but she sucks through the mits too. I am scared that this habit is not going to go so easily and soon.....and it is going to cause orthodontic problems in her later.

Can someone please help?

hi ami
as momtwiceover replied.. i too have a kid whos 15mnth old. she still sucks her thumb but only when shes sleepy. when we enquired with the dr he said thats ok.. we stop her and distract her if she tries to suck her thumb other than during the sleeping time.. guess once they grow old and understand wot we speak it wud b easier for us to stop them from doing this.. until then we jus have to live with it.. so dont worry...

Hey Ami, this is very common. I also faced the same problem but thats the thing our infants enjoy to do the most..so be it..let them do ..it will stop at a certain age when children grow up.. My sister's son still puts his 2 fingers in his mouth while sleeping:)

Hi! My daughter started sucking her thumb around this time , it cud be bcoz of teething. She is nearly 1yr now, the sucking is still there but much less and only when she is tired or sleepy and she stops once she has fallen asleep. It cud be a security feeling or soothing but i think it will stop soon and i don't think it will affect the gums. Don't worry it will fade away once more interesting things are discovered by the baby.

I have a 5.5 month old son and he too had started thumb sucking when he was 3 months. I worried a lot initially but my doc said that it could also be because of teething..(The process starts early even though u might not see the 1st tooth till the 6th or7th month)and that is y there is a urge to bite rather than suck.

Its better to stop worrying coz try what u want but they wont stop until they want to.
