Feeding:baby rice

My baby is 4 months. I have started her on baby rice, 2 tsp a day. One in the morning and one in the evening. Should I increase the feed. When should I add vegesand fruits? Also should I give her some water after a solid feed?

I don't think you should increase the solids for a 4 month old. In Canada and the US, doctors recommend holding off on solids until at least six months. If you're going to continue to offer rice cereal I would only do it twice a day maximum until your baby is six months. At that time I would increase the feed to three times a day and also introduce veggies, followed by fruits a few weeks later. Babies' main form of nutrition should be coming from breast milk or formula - solids should not replace that liquid. Always offer the liquid first, then the solid. There have been many cases where too many solids were given ane the baby stopped gaining weight and had other complications. A baby does not need the nutrition in solids until well after 8 months of age - the only reason solids are even introduced at 6 months is so the child can get used to the concept of food. Also, you asked about water - at four months of age I would only be giving the breastmilk/formula. I would introduce water only, and only if the correct amount of liquids are taken and the baby still seems thirsty. I believe a four month old should be taking in about 30 to 32 oz of breastmilk or formula in each 24 hour period. Hope that helps.

Thank you for your reply. I too wanted to exclusively breast feed my baby for 6 months but she seemed unsettled even after her feed and woke up about 3 times in the night wanting to feed. The doctor then advised me to start baby rice. Thanks very much for the info.
