HI all,
I have started Ragi malt with little sugar for my 5 month old son. He takes it well and loves it. The only problem is he does not pass motion for 4 days and more. I am worried that ragi is not suiting him. Please suggest some alternatives for giving him ragi, as i want to continue it.

No where raagi is related with motion problms,as per my knwldge (came to knw from UK doctrs) breast feeding babies will not pass motion even for 6 to 7 days and formula milk 4 days.Even my son had the same problm(he had frml milk ,will not pass his motion for 5 days ) so nothing to wrry .Its no where linked with raagi ,in fact i myself felt if my son has raagi,he used to pass urin a lot....u can continue with raagi but findout if u change adding salt instead of sugar will it help u in any way (i use salt)

I do not know if you can boil breastmilk. I used water till she was 1. I also used saltless butter, and a little sugar. Is your child on other solids as well? Ragi was the first solid I started for my daughter, and since she didn't know any other taste besides BM, she just loved it. i gave it to her around 12 noon, after an oil-massage and a bath. She slept very well after that. Would also recommend giving some water soon after. Please avoid giving ragi after 5 or 6 pm - tends to be heavy & hence there can be difficulty in digestion.
Ragi is full of calcium! One of the best food for babies!

Hi ,

I am from Chennai and in Chennai you get Manna brand Sprouted Ragi powder in Food World. I suppose u shud get in Nilgiris as well.

But I found that the powder was too grainy for my 5 month baby . So I soak Ragi seeds at night and grind and strain it before making the kanji.

Hi,

I don't think it's a good idea to boil breast milk since the antibodies may be destroyed in the heat.

We use water to boil the ragi to a paste and then dilute with warm breast milk as we feed him.

As my son ( almost 5 months ) is already taking homogenized milk as well ( he hates Nestle NAN1 ;-( and I am working ) , we add a little aavin milk too while boiling ragi.

You can find Ragi in any of the Indian stores (i got them at a store in South jersey). they look like mustard seeds. i would recommend soaking the seeds overnight and grinding & straining it as opposed to using the powder. I cooked it with just water & butter, since the doc advised not to use milk before my daughter was a yr old. traditionally they add Ghee, but that can be constipating - hence butter & a little (very little) sugar. Add the sugar only after the mixture has turned glassy, as sugar increases cooking time.

hi perks. sorry i dont live in the US so i don't know where u can get ragi. it is called "finger millet" or "african millet" in english. it looks like mustard seeds, only more brown. it is a very nutritious food and is normally given to babies around 4 months. i know that we can make it with formula. but bcoz it has to be boiled and thickened after adding the milk, i am not sure if i can use breastmilk. i mean, can we boil breastmilk for a few minutes? will it go bad? thats what i am not sure about. but otherwise, ragi is a great starter. it is normally also mixed with a little ghee and sugar b4 giving to baby, but i think i will be trying without the ghee and sugar till he is at least 6 months. this is one of the other reasons i am trying to make it with BM (as he knows the taste of BM, he wont be too reluctant to take it). i hope someone can advice me.
