Peer Pressure:being under peer pressure

Kids when small listen to everything that their parents say. Why is it that when they grow up and are in their teens that they do the opposite to what parents say? Do friends matter more to kids then?

The reason why teens yield in to peer pressure is because they tend to gravitate toward the peers who have to deal the same problems and the same situations as they themselves are. they feel that they will be understood and accepted more as compared to parents. Moreover kids feel free to discuss any topic with their peers.

Peer groups have influence kids especially adolescents because for them belonging to a group matters most. they feel accepted and thus their self-esteem is enhanced. It is not that they do not listen to parents but to be ion a group they need to conform to the rules of that group. This is many a times just a passing phase.
