Hi, I have a 7-month old son (my second) who is vomitting after taking rice cereal. I started him on plain gerber rice cereal at age of 6 months and after 10 days of feeding him without any problems, he threw up one fine day within 2 hours of taking the cereal. We thought it was Gastro and after starving him for the whole day to clear his stomach, resumed breast milk - after 1 week gap, gave him rice ceral again and vomitting returned. Doctor said co-incidence and I was not convinced, so I gave a gap of 1 month and tried home made rice porridge - and he vomitted again within 2 hours. Each time vomitting persists for a couple of hours and after that, he is fine -as if nothing was wrong with him at all !!! There is no family history of any kind of food allergies and my 1st daughter started on solids at age of 5 months with no problems. My pediatrician says that nobody can be allergic to rice, that in her 30+ years of experience, she has not come across any rice allergy. She wants me to wait another month or 2 and try again. Has anyone else had similar experience? What alternate foods can I give him? Is this FOOD ALLERGY or INTOLERANCE? Will my baby grow out of it? Anybody that can provide any information or share their experience will earn my gratitude. Thank you.

Vidya replied. I had same experience with my daughter who is now 12 months. We gave her rice cereal at three different times when she was about 4-5 months and she vomitted all three times. We did the allergy tests and she did not have any. So we started giving her oatmeal cereal instead of rice cereal and she was prefectly fine. Now she eats Dal-chawal , khichidi and does not vomit. I would suggest the same for u, try oatmeal cereal, it has better taste than rice cereal and start giving your baby dal-chawal instead of rice cereal.
Mommy replied. Hi Latha,
Not really! I still kept giving him little wheat here & there (like rotis, chappathi etc) once in while and since his wheat allergy was less,my son outgrew it. Abt Breastfeeding, I really regret till date. I could only bf him until 4 months because I had to eliminate most of the food from my diet and it was so hard for me to keep up. Because I was working full time and was pumping milk every 3 hrs and worst couldn't eat almost anything. So my allergy specialist asked me to switch to Alimentum...but believe me the formula worked great for my son.
But yes, I still regret abt it till date. But i'm so sure you're little one is just having digestion problem and not allergic to rice. Just a small idea - to test your baby, you can actually buy rice pasta (made out of 100%rice) and boil it with little salt until it becomes very very soft and mushy and try giving to your son. If he takes it well...then it's just digestion problem. I hope that he's okie. Bye and take care!
Mommy replied. Hi Mom,
After seeing your query, I wanted to reply to you. Just my two cents, I may be right or may be wrong. So, Just don't take all my words to be right, but you can take it as tip. My baby had allergies to Wheat and Dairy products right from 2 months. When we took allergy testing in 4 months,we found this. But now he is 18 months old and he has outgrown his allergy. (Thank God). When we took him to the allergy Specialist,he said that my son could be allergic to rice, the reason being that we Indians eat a lot of rice and it could be a big reason. Whereas most of the americans are allergic to wheat, because they consume a lot of wheat.but luckily, my son was not allergic to rice when we tested him. But in your case, your son might not be allergic at all..it could just be that he's not able to digest it.Try to water the cereal very nicely with either breastmilk or formula and give him, let's see if that helps. My son even now can't digest banana, can u beleive that??? It's so soft but he throws up everytime i feed banana. Hence I took it off from his diet. I'm pretty sure that your little one is just having digestion problem...so don't worry at all. Everything will be ok and I wish you GoodLuck with your sweetheart.

Thank you for your encouraging tips. When you found out that your baby was allergic to wheat, did you just keep him away from wheat until age 1.5? Where you breastfeeding? If so, did you stay away from wheat too? Please let me know....Thank you.
