Feeding:Tiny 1 yr old....

Hi,
I have a 1 year old daughter. I know that as long as the baby is healthy and stays on the curve I should not worry but I do have a little bit of concern about my baby's weight. Till her 12 month visit she was in the 50th percentile. But now she is in 10th percentile. She eats whatever I give her and drinks full fat milk. Is there a way I can help her gain a little bit of weight ? She poops like 3 times a day. When I give her chicked then she poops even more. Sometimes I can even see the dal/carrots in the poop. Does this mean that she has a high metabolism? that the food does not stay long enough in her to get absorbed ? She looks tiny. People actually comment on her 'thinness' in supermarkets. It worries me a lot. Please advise.

Thanks

Hello Kay and Rajshree:

My younger son aged 3.3 yrs has the same problem. He was a very very healthy and chubby baby, but since the past 1 - 1/2 yr has dropped weight for some reason or the other. There are times when I feel he is consuming enough but there is no weight gain or it is very very slow. The doc. says he is not underweight and pretty normal but such slow weight gain must hv a reason. I gave up and stopped worrying for a while and hv found there is a slight improvement in his weight even if it is very little.

Every child gains weight and grows in height, in his or her own course. But we as mothers tend to worry all the time and over this too. Observe after a couple of months and see.

Kay, may be you should try and give your daughter some thing for digestion Something like Eplazyme, off and on, besides the normal dill water available. It helped my son

Do let me know if it helps

Cheers

Hi,
I understand your concern. I have a 15 months old baby boy. Since his birth he has been on the 10th percentile and despite being a good eater he hasn't been able to gain weight. And I too come across many people who just keep commenting about his small build. And actually tell me to feed him properly which is quite frustrating. Because as mothers we only know how much care we are taking of our babies. Anyway , I used to worry a lot about this thing but my family doctor has told me that few kids start slowly to grow but ultimately their its the genes which will dominate in the end. So if in your family everybody is quite good in height and weight, then don't worry your girl will also reach that point.May be she will pick up late , so don't worry. And just dont care about what other people say. And all the best with your baby.
