Hi All,
Just wanted to let everyone know that babies are much smarter than we give them credit. My son who is now 3.5 months old has been using the potty to pass motion for over a month now. He still urinates in his nappy but passes motion in his potty every morning after his feed.
Naturally you can imagine how surprised we were to learn that this was possible; in fact it was my son who trained us and not the other way around.
I would just like to share our experience with everyone so that you may be able to recognise some possible signs our babies might be giving us.
At around 2 months our son suddenly started passing motion in the tub everytime we gave him a bath. This happened for 4 days straight and by that time we were pretty tired of having to repeatedly change the bath water. So on the 5th night my mother suggested just filling the tub with just enough water so that his bum was covered and sure enough our son passed motion again when he was placed in the warm tub.
It was after this that my mother and I realised that my son was associating the warm bath water with passing motion. So the next day we used a plastic ice cream container and cut a hole in the middle of the lid, filled it up full with warm water and placed my son on it; and sure enough after some vocal encouragement from us, my son passed motion.
From then on, we put him on our make-shift potty for about 2 weeks before we were confident about purchasing a real potty. And now I place him on his potty every morning to pass his motions for the day.
The one thing is that I guess we have been lucky that our son passes motion everyday; which greatly helped with the potty training. Am not sure how effective potty training would be for those babies that did not pass motion quite regularly....however from our experience I really do believe that our babies are really much smarter than we give them credit for and that it really is never too early to start potty training our babies.
Cheers,
