Working Mother:Giving up your career
2008-01-15
Name: Cleopatra

Hi What do you think about a woman giving up her career for some time for her child? My daughter is 4 years old- & I feel that now is the time that she needs me around- to be a friend. But am worried about how it will impact my career later on. Also- though we are reasonably well-off- I still worry about not being financial independent.
Do you think its worth the trade-off?

Regards

Hi
it all depends how u feel nothing right or wrong
my daughter is 2 years but ia taking a break bcoz i think she wants me near and somehow i was not able to work that properly even with help of parents.I literally got tired.
So i think when she a little older will join back
ur daughter is already 4 years if really u need a break u can do but make a plan when u want to join back
and make neccessary arrangements
best of luck

Dear cleopatra,
Firstly listen to what your heart says. I am sure it is a tug of war for u betwenn being fin. indep. and being a good mother to your daughter. in fact for the women of today they have to slog a lot to come up in life. never mind. why do u feel that u may have to ' give up' a carer in order to look after your daughter ? in fact she is 4 yrs old, maybe going to LKG already right ? so why cant u take up a part time job in the field u r good at ? this will satisfy your professional calling as well as not put much strain on yourself. nowadyas there are so many work from home options. well u have not mentioned your field in the post, but i presume whatever field it may be, surely u can opt for flexibility in work depending on your zeal and experience. wait for 2 or 3 yrs more and once she goes to full day school, u can devote more time for your job and be with her when she returns home. all the best. dont ever think that for her u are making a big sacrifice. in my opinion it is wrong to think this way. all the best.

Cleopatra,
check out if u can hire someone to look after your daughter when u r at work. this may not be easy, but another option is to look out for a job which has its own day care or a creche very close to its place. in the meanwhile, u can keep looking for part time/WFH options. all the best

Hi Tony

Thanks for your advice. The problem is that i am based in Kuwait- where part-time/ work from home options are hard to come by- if not non-existent!! FYI- I am a process consultant- with a bank.
