Hi,

I was told Raagi is good for babies. Just got some Raagi flour from the Indian store, but I'm not sure how one's supposed to prepare it. Does it have to be cooked first, or is it ready to eat? I've bought the Raagi FLOUR, not that \";raagi satva\"; or whatever it is that comes in ready packages for kids. Please let me know...thanks :)

Hi Gauri,
Yesterday I tried the Ragi (just 1 teaspoon) prepared with the same way you had mentioned and my baby liked it!
Thank you very much for giving me the idea for keeping Ragi as one food, infact a really healthy food for the babies.
I wish I knew it already since I haven't tried Ragi for my toddler daughter when she was a baby!@@

Hi Gauri and other moms,
Good to know that how good the Ragi is for babies. I didn't try that yet with my baby who is going to be 10 months soon. I guess it's OK to start giving it from now on. Do you think since baby isn't introduced to this so far, he may not like it?! Also the other concern I have is he is already vomitting after his solids. In this case do you think Ragi is easily digestable?!! Please reply. Thanks in advance.

Girija,

my baby turned 10 months 2 weeks ago, and I started giving him Raagi just 2 days ago. I wasn't sure if he'd like it either....just try a little the first time. Also, as they grow older, we should give some more time between feeds. He used to feed every 2 hrs before. He still feels hungry 2 hrs after he has milk, but after a solid meal he can sustain himself for abt 3-4 hrs. And he eats better when he himself feels hungry too....if I look at the watch and try to feed him, I practically have to throw it all away. Take care...

Hi Girija,
If your son is vomis after a feed, then you are either force-feeding or overfeeding him. My son too would vomit after eating and my ped. asked us to reduce his feeding amt. He no longer vomits now.
Do not make the consistency too thin.
Give him some time to chew. Let him decide when to take the next bite.
Also if the baby is congested, they tend to breathe and eat by mouth at the same time thus gagging themselves.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply, everyone. What I did was took a tablespoon of Raagi (didn't want a whole lot teh first time) and boiled it in about half a cup milk and a little water....when it became thick, I added some sugar and very little ghee. My baby loved it!

Vatsalya, my son Aditya is 10 months now....what's your son's name?

Dear Sonum,

You're welcome. But Ragi is not split Masoor dal. As I said earlier, it is Red Millet or Finger Millet, a type of grain. I think it is called 'nachni' in Hindi. It is also available in powder form in stores.

It is a good source of proteins, carbohydrates, iron, calcium and other minerals, and is easily digestible. I have also heard that it helps in bone and teeth formation in babies and that it is also good for brain development. I think this is the reason it is considered to be good for babies.

Regards,
Jaya
