Feeding:Bottle or bowl/spoon

I have a 1.5 month old baby boy who is bottle fed on infant formula. One pediatrician whom I referred to suggested I should use bottles only(if not breast milk) as the sucking reflex helps. Another one strongly opposed bottles and reprimanded me on using them. He asked me to switch to bowl/spoon immediately. I am thoroughly confused as both these doctors are experts in their feild. Any suggestions / experiances..?

Hi Medha,

Do you live in India? I hear that peds in India are against using bottles even for very small infants. The reason for concern is hygiene. Some parents are not fully aware of the proper methods to sterilize bottles, nipples etc. Improper sterilization leads to unhealthy babies. So, peds make a blanket recommendation to all parents.
If you are able to thoroughly wash and sterilize the bottles, go ahead and use them. I agree that the sucking need of a baby must be fulfilled.

Good luck!

Thanks Aarti. Yes I am from Mumbai. I am taking enough precautions about the sterlisation of bottles. So I think I can carry on with it.

I used to breastfeed aswell give my baby bottles at night. You can very well give bottles because its easy for the baby to suck from bottle than spoon. Spoon can be introduced when they are 4 to 5 months old..

Hi Medha, bowl and spoon with a 1.5 month old will be quite an arduous task..
Someone I know used to do that with their baby and it was quite frustrating. The baby would have an ounce in like an hour and spit out most of it..

My son would drink both from the bottle and would breast feed too since he was born..

In my opinion, if you want to save yourself and your baby from a lot of frustration you should use a bottle...
but it's up to you
