My 8 year old son is terrified of one of his teachers - this lady uses the stick liberally and even bad mouths.

The other day when my son was sick and was too scared to inform this teacher about copying his classwork; I accompanied himk and told her that my son was aprehensive about her % was too scared. To which , she started yeling and scolding my son right in front of me...

My son goes to one of the most well known schools here.How do I deal with this? Will bringing up the issue with the principal only worsen it??

I think you should talk to the teacher and let her know your concern. Just imagine how you would feel in your child's situation. Tell the teacher to talk to your child and ask her not to get scared of her.

I guess you must not be in the US, because:
(1) teachers are NOT allowed to frighten the children by using a stick or any other object or even words, let alone force or threats;
(2) no teacher I ever had gave out chocolates.

Why on earth would you let someone intimadate your child?
If you are trusting this person to care for your child, then you should have enough courage to speak freely to her -- you only have your child's interest at heart.

Yes in india it happens even though many things have changed but still one can find this kind of a thing and if a child is not used to it the community says that the child is spoiled.
Therefore, I said my child has to get used to the roughness of the society.
Bye

My daughter has cried 2 more times same incident. When I went for a report day to see the teacher and came to know that she sits next to the teacher, then I assumed that she has never been scolded at home only corrected politely and she does not know that we can even hit with the stick so she got scared and cried. I hope she gets used to it. Bcoz my friends said she should get used to it.
Though I did not tell the teacher about it bcoz when my daughter cried the teacher gave her a choc that means the teacher is not at fault she does not mean to harm the children she is doing her duty of imposing discipline in the children. And bcoz she wanted my child to be comfortable she has given a choc. Also the teacher said that my child is friendly with her but does not mix with others. I was satisfied with her answers and her gestures showed that she is a nice lady.
