Due Date Club December 2005:Confusion for treating GD

Dear friends,

My first blood sugar report post lunch showed 167 and second report taken after a week on strict diet (absolutely no sugar intake) showed 161. My gyn referred me to a diabetologist who has advised me to buy a glucometer and chart the readings post meals that i must take thrice a day. After 3-4 days, if readings are still erratic, he will start insulin for me.

My family thinks that this is not so serious and i must not follow all these things. A cousin who is a doctor told me readings r usually higher in pregnancy , but one must not worry. There is no need to take insulin or anything. My family also agrees with him.

Im really in a fix. I dont know how to convince my in laws that what the diabetologist says must be followed. Anyone gone through gestational diabetes ? Any suggestions ? Friends, pls advise!

Hi! Rids
I am a GD mom too!
I did some research on the internet and found out that sugar readings are usually higher for us moms to be....I suggest that you do bring this up with your doc. I am not on insulins yet but will know for sure on the 29th and will let u know of my discussion with the doc.
I ahve beentrying a strict diet for last 1o days and all my readings except fasting one is under control. Try low carb ...mix wheat bran with atta if u eat roti, no rice or potatoes, dals are starch too..so include that in ur serving of starch when u count ur servings. Eat 6 small meals instead of 3 big ones..U probably know all of thsi...I am also eating lots of karelas..supposed to be good for reducing sugar..is helping me.
Anyway lets keep each other posted...are u in India or the U.S.???..I am in the U.S.( California).
Take care..ur best bet is to be aware..somedocs are predisposed to meds in general..but hey at one point u have to have faith..make sure all ur ques are answered before u go in for anything..that's my take!
GD is very common among Indians..u r not alone!!!
Cheer up!!

Hi! You made me feel better.
Ive been reading up on GD too, from books and the web and its pretty common. Ive got to track my readings fro 3-4 days and then will know when to start insulin. All the best for your apptment.

Ive been given a diet plan by my diabetologist and im sticking to it. I dotn mind doing all of that, except that i love icecream and i have a strong craving for it. Im in india (Mumbai).

Take care, i will also keep you posted. We'll stay in touch and that will ease our worries.

Love

Thanks Vara and Susmitha,

My hubby is very co-operative and we have had a talk with the family. I have decided to go ahead with the docs advise and take insulin if required.

Will go thru other posts on GD.

Thanks

Your thoughts are absolutely wrong. Doctors know better and whatever they adivce is for our good only. Pl don't neglect them.

Do go in for insulin if they suggest. Its not a big issue. There r so many like me who r on insulins. Baby's health is more important now. Don't take any risk.

I would also like u to go thru some posts on GD in Oct board so that u will get some idea as to what to eat. If the readings r still high then pl start with ur insulins.

goodluck

Hi rids,
try to think cool. Docs know the better. Its better to follow as the docs told. In india they don't control the diet during pregnancy especially with sweets. Ofcourse I heard its common the readings 'll be high during pregnancy but how much it should be the docs know right? And I also heard if the GD is not controled there is a chance of obesse babys (they told in prenatal class) You can discuss your doubts with doc.
Try to think cool and decide what to do
good luck

Very good doctor
Hi,

I delived a baby boy in March 2009. I consulted Dr.Chitra Ramamurthy during my pregnancy cycle. She' s one of the best doctors in Bangalore. Not many people know about her. She handled the entire process in a very professional manner. I used to visit her clinic in Jayanagar 3rd block. She is very caring and affable. She says what to do and what not to do. ... - Sandhya Rao [View Message]

So long as your baby is feeding, that' s all that really matters. These days, formulas are packed with everything the baby needs, and although it is never as good as breast milk, it' s perfectly fine. It sounds like maybe what you are missing is the bonding that breast feeding provides? My first child had both breast and bottle milk for the first 6 months, when I had a mis... - Jhumri [View Message]
