Hetal replied. In children at age of 11 and younger, abdominal pain may be related to injury to the abdomen or an illness, such as stomach flu, an ear infection, a urinary tract infection, or strep throat. Some more serious causes of abdominal pain in children include appendicitis, lead poisoning, or problems with the intestines, such as intussusception or malrotation.
Older children (anywhere from 2 years onwards) are able to point to the location of the pain and describe how severe it is.and to cure that, its best to take them to gynac or gastrologist. instead of your regular ped.
try taking an appointment just after lunch,,since the severity of the pain in your case is after meals,,and that time your kid will be able to express the best and exact where it pains really bad,,and if required, at that point of time, dr might let you go thru some screen test or blood test or whatever they feel acc to the symptoms your baby is showing.
Abdominal pain can occur one time, or it can occur repeatedly over several months. Recurrent abdominal pain (RAP) is a condition that affects normal children between the ages of 4 and 11.
however, these are the top five causes of abdominal pain -
1. Constipation – this is by far the most common cause of chronic abdominal pain. Here are some clues to help you decide if this is the cause: Occurs several times a day - as the colon contracts several times a day against the hard backed-up stool, your child will complain of cramping pain. Pain will subside after contraction stops, usually after 10 to 30 minutes.
Child often points to the belly button as the site of pain.(check on wats in your case).Pain can vary from mild to severe. Your child may have symptoms of constipation such as:
Straining hard to pass a bowel movement. Thick, hard stools. Having a bowel movement only once every few days. Some children can have abdominal pain from constipation but not have any other obvious signs of constipation. Some less obvious clues to possible constipation include:
Infrequent bowel movements.Takes a long time to pass a stool. May spend 10 minutes or more on the toilet. When your child does go, he passes a lot of stool. Passing small, hard grape-sized pieces frequently. Small stool marks soil his underwear. some kids have habit of avoiding to go to restroom when they have to go for passing stool,,this might result in severe constipation,,as the matter is not realised on time and gets stucked up,sometimees causing toxic and might damage the intestinal walls, and also reduces apetite in longer run.
2. Lactose intolerance or milk protein allergy – these two conditions are not the same thing. One is an inability to digest lactose sugar, the other is an allergic reaction throughout the body to milk proteins. Both, however, can cause upset stomach and abdominal pain. Symptoms include: Stomach cramps after eating dairy. Gas pains.Intestinal cramps.
Diarrhea. The pain is usually crampy, gassy pain felt anywhere in the abdomen. It often is worse after eating dairy, but may come and go anytime during the day.check for the same when it comes to meats, fish, nuts, or any such doubtful foods.
3. Heartburn, gastritis and ulcers – gastritis is the medical term for upset stomach or heartburn. It refers to inflammation in the stomach caused by over-production of stomach acid. Ulcers occur when this acid erodes too far into the stomach lining. Older children will describe it as a burning or gnawing pain over the upper middle or left side of the abdomen, or even the middle of the chest. Younger children can't describe a pain as \";burning\";. There are two main causes of this over-production of acid: Stress – emotional stress in children can cause increased stomach acid and stomach aches. Infection – there is a particular bacteria called Helicobacter Pylori that can infect the stomach and cause increased stomach acid and pain. This infection can run in families. It is diagnosed either by a simple blood test or with a biopsy taken during endoscopy of the stomach. The blood test is not very reliable for children under 5 years.
Medications – some medications can cause stomach irritation. The most common culprits are aspirin and ibuprofen products ( check have you given that anytime,if no, eliminate this aspect)
The treatment for gastritis or stomach ulcers is to take antacid pills before meals (Zantac 75 or Pepcid AC are two common over-the-counter ones) or after meals you can try Tums, Maalox or Mylanta. If this type of burning pain continues for more than two weeks, you should see your doctor. The treatment for H. Pylori infection is several weeks of antibiotics and antacids together.
4. Intestinal infections – there are a variety of bacteria and parasites that can infect the stomach or intestines. The pain can occur anywhere in the belly. The biggest clue that the abdominal pain may be due to an intestinal infection is the presence of chronic diarrhea. These infections are diagnosed by sending samples of the diarrhea to a lab for testing. The treatment is medication to eradicate the infection.
5. Behavioral causes – this is particularly common in children ages 4 to 7. They will complain of belly pain simply to get more attention. The pain is probably not real in this case, however, if your child's desire for attention is very strong, she may perceive the pain as real. This commonly occurs when a new baby arrives in the family – your older child may feel left out. It can also occur during a move, when starting a new school(might be the case,), a family tragedy or break up, or any other time when your child may feel left out, insecure or worried about something. One way to approach this situation is when your child complains of the pain, simply acknowledge her by saying something like \";I know dear, sometimes my tummy hurts too. But you will be okay.\"; Do not give any special attention to it, and do not try to help your child find a remedy. For example, do not have her lay down and you rub her tummy to make it feel better. Make some effort to give her extra attention at times when she is NOT complaining.
This will lessen her need to complain for attention. There is really no way to know for sure if the pain is due to behavior or illness. Use your instinct & strongly trust them, and do not ignore the pain longer that you feel is appropriate.however, since your baby have had gastric problem, this aspect is kind of eliminated.
Other causes – there are many other, less common causes. These include:
Tumors – this is an extremely rare occurrence in children. The doctor can often feel an abdominal mass. Do not jump to this as a possible diagnosis, because it is extremely rare in kids.
Organ problems – very very rarely, one of the abdominal organs may have a problem. These include the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys, and spleen.
also a 3.7years old baby should not be eating ginger garlic paste..its very hot & actually not recommended for adults too..unless otherwise you have been recommended by some well known trusted ayurvedic dr and your baby is having acute gas problem or is severly colic.its very hot in nature, and so is tulsi,,,but tulsi upto 2-3 leaves is good to eat every morning as under ayurveda.but might be a possibility that she isnt comfortable with it ! try not giving it once and see how she feels.samewith neem.
please consult a good gyn or gastrologist,,he might be interested in doing xray (in case of tumors(very rare, dont panic, constipation, swallowed objects stucked somewhere in the digestive system, gallstones or just kidney stones),urin tests(for kidney problem),stool test (routine culture for intestinal bacterial infections, ova & parasites if any present in stool,if or not diarrea infections(this dr can diagonise without the test too),giardia antigen faily uncommon cause of abdominal pain or diarea,,wont found in O & p test,,hemocult test whther or not any hidden stains of blood in stools,,)
the other is abdominal ultrasound ,,,very common,,and blood test mostly associated with h.pylori stomach infections,,it also shows sometimes the malfunction of any abdominal organ..
so thats all i could figure out actually, from the details you provided..if your child is waking up at 2am in the morning and crying in pain or sleeps curlded up,holding his stomach and crying in sleep)kids do that when they are badly tired & are deeply in sleep but cant stop expressing their pain),,its better to take a look at a new dr ! and since this thing has started, as you told after her school days,,quite possible that she is eating or drinking something over there, that is bothering her or doesnt suit her(give her strict instructions not to share the lunchboxes or eat anything other than that wat her teacher gives or what you pack for her lunch),,or prob not drinking good water or not eating her meals properly at school..
check with other kids, if or not they are ok with these issues,,as they all drink same water or food if given in school,,,but make sure, thats not the cause.
my goal was not to scare you but to let you know about all the causes or reasons for the pains that could occur in kids below 11 years ! so please dont get panic or scared but take a second opinion of some good dr and tell him how the things are going.consulting is not a problem things do come out differently with drs too.
also want to add, one of my friend has used to maintain a very good habit whenever her kids(she has got 4 kids,so its obvious she has to do that) gets sick by making a pain diary,,i too took those points, they were helpful and easier for her dr to diagnose the cause of the pain without any exams or tests,,in most of the cases her kids got sick.you are preventing all hazzles of testing and making your baby feel miserable.
here is it,,just pasting it for you,
Write down every day when the pain occurs, and answer the following questions with each episode:
Time of day -
Before, after, or nowhere near a meal(wat meals she had, note down)
Severity on a scale of 1 to 10 – does your child simply tell you her tummy hurts, but shows no outward signs? Or does she double over in pain, holding her stomach and rolling on the floor? & yelling in pain (judge your child reactions and trust your instincts related to how your baby reacts for a particular pain)
How long each episode lasts -- time of pain and number of times the pain occurred in a day.
Where in the belly is the pain -- let your daughter pin point it,instead of wholehand,,you also put your finger tip and ask her where it pains more and where is less.
What do you do to help the pain – what remedies have worked, what has not worked. write all of them,,let your dr see them,,and be the best judge whats all good or bad is done to soothe the baby.
What is your child doing right before the pain occurs ?
Does it awaken her at night ? how often.
Does it occur only at school, or only at home, or both ? ask her if she is experiencing any such pains in the schools after her mini meals or anytime.ask her if she fell down anytime hurting her abdominal part.
Does it occur on the weekends only,,if so, note down all you did on weekends with her.
The answers to these questions will be very valuable to your doctor, and when you come to your appointment well prepared written,,your dr will prob wil find an ease to realise the problem..
sometimes we think baby food habits are healthy & upto mark, but might not be the case when you share them with dr..feel free to talk to your dr, what all you are giving,,esp when you visit gyn or gastrologist specialist..let him decide about it,,its a worth doing that.
hope ths was helpful by any means.
Thats all i could understand as of now with the details provided,,any thing more this, i couldnt dig out.
so take care & good luck.

RE: Eczema concern
Hello,
I had a similar query a few months ago concerning eczema occuring in toddlers. As far as I know, it can be due to a varrying number of factors and common foods that end up causing the condition in 1-2 year old toddlers.
In my research I found this article really helpful in addressing the problem:
