Bowel and Bladder Movements:Loose motions for my kid

Hello Everyone,

My kid is 14 months old and he developed loose motions from past 4-5 days. Could any one suggest what diet can I give to my kid as he is resisting for regular rice and dal. He lost around 0.5 Kg due to this. I am so worried for him. Even though his frequency of passing stools has come down, he is still passing some 4-5 times a day. Some times he is vomiting too. Could any one help me in suggesting on how to deal such a situation?

Thanks in Advance,
Archana

My son is 20 months old and still hardly drinks water. We keep offering it to him, but he' ll have just a few sips. Even with juices it' s the same, just a few sips if he' s really thirsty.

If your son has 2 - 3 glasses of water a day, that' s perfectly fine. You said he is better now. If that is the case and his motion is improving on a day to day basis, then it' s ok. Don' t worry too much about his diet. He will eat when he feels better. Try offering him mix veg pulao or khichdi for a change. Some of my friends have children who are hearty eaters. But, even they stop eating completely when they' re tummy is upset. And they automatically resume eating their standard dal chaval when they feel better. So, relax, his appetite will pick up.

Thanks a lot for the advice. My son already got around 10 teeth. But not even for a single teeth, he faced motions. Can it happen for the 11th teeth? As he has not faced this phase for 10 teeth, I was under the impression that he will not have motions for teething. Can this happen?

Please take him to a doctor. It' s normal for infants and toddlers to avoid food and / or milk when they are sick, but anything that lasts for more than 2 - 3 days needs to be shown to the doc. It could be a severe stomach infection or any other kind of infection, which needs to be treated. You said that the frequency of passing stools has come down to 4 - 5 times a day. That is still TOO MUCH. At the most, 2 - 3 times a day is normal. Anything more than that is NOT GOOD. Don' t force him to eat if he doesn' t want to. My son doesn' t eat whenver he is sick... and once he recovers, he doesn' t eat for a week or two. So, just keep offering him food, but let him have as little as he wants. Reduce milk if his tummy is upset. Try giving him fruits. And please ensure that he drinks water, as well as fruit juice, or dal pani, etc. Give him some multi vitamin drops daily for a week or two. And PLEASE... take him to the doc immediately.

Hi Mel,

Thanks a lot for your advice. But I took him to the hospital on the very first day itself. He took OFM, a 5 day dose as prescribed by my pedea.. He is getting better now. Am waiting for his appetite to increase. He is not liking to drink water. Only on the first day of his motions, he drank electral water and plain water along with coconut water..but from 2nd day onwards, he is refusing to take water much. He hardly drinks 2-3 glasses a day. Have you ever faced such a situation with your son?

At the same time the child is feeling some pain So try to understand and consult a doctor.... - sharmasanvi [View Message]
RE:bowel movement in 2 week old infant
Some babies go through phases when they either can't use the muscles to empty their bowels or they "forget how to". In that case, it's safest keep using the suppositories daily to make them do a dirty in 5 minutes.... - Su 03 [View Message]
RE:where can I get laxative?
You can get either glycerin or bisacodyl suppositories in any Indian pharmacy - I recommend saving money by not buying child-size ones, instead cutting adult supps in half to make a child-size dosage.
(I have a daughter with long-term bowel issues: she can't "do" without them!)... - Su 03 [View Message]
RE:constipation
When the baby is in discomfort from constipation (especially if she hasn't done some dirty for two days or more), the first thing you should give is a glycerin suppository.... - Su 03 [View Message]
RE:hi
Most doctors say banana doesn't help - the potassium in it makes constipation worse. Remember you can make your own prune puree in a blender. Grape, grapefruit and papaya are also laxative fruits. And remember you can safely use baby suppositories as often as you need to (they also help with "training" the baby to do a dirty at the same time every day)... - Su 03 [View Message]
RE:Baby Movements/Development
Consult a good doctor immediately as this should not be ignored as it will cause a big issue if you let it go now, please seek doctors advice on immediate basis.... - Aditi [View Message]
RE:Baby Movements/Development
Hi there please be calm and relax as it happens sometime the child takes little time to start walking or crawling also but in your case the child should have started crawling if not walking.... - Anita [View Message]
