Name: worried mom

hi i am a mom of twins. they r going to be one year old. My problem is my kids both have teeth upper and lower. but they dont chew their food. I give them mashed food and mostly little bit of soup consistency . Since i am mananging from day one alone i am kindf frustrating. My eldest one throws up a lot and he is little bit underweight also. so i am more concerned.

I am giving them pureed their lunch and mostly dinner is oatmeal cereal.

My husband keep saying other kids r eating everything and chweing why cant u try. As i dont have elders i am worried and dont know what to do. even if i give my kids finger foods halfed size they eat only a bit and then they show no interest. I am so desperate i dont know what to do and its frustrating when i see other kids eat and i have grind and give them and i cant give anything else/

pls pls pls help me.

First of all... TURN A DEAF YEAR TO your husband and ANYONE ELSE who compares your child to other children. My son is 19 months old and DOES NOT WANT TO EAT. He dislikes eating. We have to think of different ways and means to get something into his stomach. All children are different. And we shouldn' t compare.

However, I completely DISAGREE with Puja. Even infants CHEW. My son got his first tooth at the age of 12 months. But those are the front teeth, which are used for biting off pieces of a food item. Children chew with their gums.

What you need to understand is that your primary concern (since your older twin is a bit underweight) is to ENSURE THAT THEY GET ADEQUATE FOOD. That is the MOST important thing.

Whether the food is pureed or mashed or served whole is immaterial. Just make sure they eat. You can do this for the 3 main meals of the day. So, now that we are sure of their main meals, what you can do for their mid morning and mid afternoon snack is:

give them finger food at these times, so even if they don' t eat much, it is not a problem, but it will get them used to the concept of chewing a little bit everyday, twice a day. Give them different things everyday... like:

Small bits of well boiled potato, carrot, egg, thin strips of chicken, small bits of well-cooked maggi noodles (maggi noodles not very often, only once in a while), potato wedges / french fries (sliced thin and long, so they can hold it in their hand), thin, long strips of cheddar cheese... etc.

Remember one thing, it is VERY HARD to raise even one infant. You are raising TWO at the same time. It is a tough job, and believe it or not, YOU ARE DOING a WONDERFUL JOB. So, don' t let your husband or anyone else discourage you with such remarks. It' s not like he' s an expert on infants and toddlers. And every child has some or the other peculiarity. So, calm down, stop worrying, and KEEP TRYING.

dear worried mom a one yera old child only have front upper 4 and lower2 or 4 teeth., those are designed for cutting not chewing.,if you watch ur-self eating you' ll find out that we have molars for chewing not front teeths. my baby is 12 months just like your' s and he is eating semi-solid food and even parantha' s and roti' s. here is how he eats i give him small bits of roti and he just collects it in his mouth and try to cut it into even smaller pieces from his front teeths and just dissolve it and gut it down. so u c dear he is actually not chewing it. pls. don' t be frustrated just introduce them to solid food first time don' t expect them to eat whole bread or parantha just put a small bite in their mouth and give them time to find out by themselves how to bit it further and eat. don' t force hem next bite untill the 1st is already there in their mouth. best of luck.
