Mel replied. Distracting is normal. Most toddlers are fussy about eating since they are newly mobile and want to wander around and play. They don' t want to sit in one place and eat. I give my son some cups of water / few katoris & spoons to bang / a small container with sand or raw rice to play with, and then feed him. If she likes cherios, let her eat cherios for breakfast, or after she has eaten some of her main meal.
I know the milk dilemma. But, the fact is that she doesn' t like the taste of cow' s milk, since she is used to the taste of breastmilk. Try giving her ONLY breast milk in a sippy cup. Once she is used to drinking from the sippy cup... and has your trust that it is filled with something she likes, then give her breastmilk mixed with a very small quantity of regular milk, then after a week gradually increase the qty of cow' s milk to half and half, and slowly (over 3 months or so) keep reducing the qty of breastmilk.
It' s not about how early they introduce milk, because I introduced formula milk from the 4th month on, and he didn' t like it much. Some children are just hungrier than others. My son still wakes once in the night for a feed, so I give him a bottle of milk then (when he' s quite sleepy) and most of the time he has it.
Hope this helps. All the best.
Mel replied. Hi Pruth. Does your daughter eat other food properly ? Veggies, fruits, meats / beans, dals, etc ? There are a lot of alternate sources of calcium like leafy green vegetables, potatoes, carrot juice, gud, til (sesame seeds), mung dal, soy, dals and beans, brown rice, oats, etc. Ease her out of breastfeeding gradually. Don' t nurse her after meals, so that way she may eat more. Omit one nursing session per week. You can also give her calcium drops (McCalvit / Ostocalcium Syrup - Check with your doc, first).

Thank you Mel,
My daughter eats other food but only if i am distracting story, book reading, playing toy.......is it normal with the kids to keep them busy while they are eating? she loves eating cherios any time of day. I will try other alternate source of calcium.thx for that.
I am gradually weaning her from breast milk but is there any other way I can start her regular milk (I give in sippy cup). In USA they start milk late around yr old is this the reason she is not drinking? in India they start around 5-6 month and I saw they are expert in drinking milk.

I don´ t agree with teh advice of starving kids who are fussy. You can increase the gaps between meals. My son is also underweight, but I don´ t subscribe to that advice.
I give him whatever he wants. Sometimes he has just dahi chaval, or just a fruit, or anything. Just let her have what she likes (as long as it is healthy). Give her a plate and let her feed herself. They love that. Give her something bland to feed herself - like finger biscuits.
