Role of in-laws:MIL's emotional tantrums
2005-02-17

Hey all
I am silent reader of this board and today I am writing about my MIL's emotional tantrums.
My MIL is 10th pass but I can say mentally highly immatured. She is known for her emotional tantrums. To explain it further she cries for each and everything, talks all kind of nonsense if something is not according to her wish and I have also seen she banging her head against wall.
Earlier when my hubby was young, she had tried for suicide 2 times (FIL being the reason). At the same time she is very manipulative and knows if she does this emotional drama everybody will bend to her.
Given this scene, how should I behave with her? I tried being nice and close to her which infact backfired me by increasing her expectations and made me to see all her tantrums.
Friends, pleaseeeee tell me what should I do and am really confused abt my behaviour with her. Day in and day out I will just be thinking abt her and how should I behave will be on my mind all the time
No peace at all...

To all the suffering DIL's:

I have been married for 7 years now and have not spent even one day of my married life thinking about the bad influence my MIL & FIL have casted on my marriage. My hubby is quite loving & considerate but its the same story everywhere.

MY ADVISE TO ALL THE SUFFERING DIL's:

1.) Get a job , get urself independent.

2.) Even after marriage never leave contact with anyone from your side of the family , especially your mother.

3.) Never complain bad about your in-laws to your hubby. He will never understand that.

4.) If you don't get mental peace with your in-laws try to pind peace and happiness in something else.

5.) Start investing your time in things that make you happy, independent & strong.

6.) Never be sacred of this useless \";so called\"; Indian Society. Never feel ashamed or feel guilty about anything.

7.) Always remember what goes around comes around, but do you even want to be included in this game of going around and coming around??? Ask yoruself!!!

8.) Ask yourself -- did you get married to this guy because your parents could not further support you?

9.) Ask yourself --- did you get married to be treated like a servant by in-laws, sex & food machine by your husband and laughing stock by your SIL??? Are you no better than this??

10.) If you live alone versus living with this kind of environment, what is better?

Answer these questions to yourself. If you have the courage today to speak the truth to yourself you will be the winner. If you keep indulging yourself in the most harmful thought of \";What will society say tomorrow?\"; have you ever asked yourself , what is your conscience telling you today?

TELL ME... I AM ALSO ONE OF THE TRAPPED FEMALES AND WANT YOUR SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGEMENT. I NEED YOU ALL IN THE SAME FASHION AS YOU NEED ME.

Hi Megha
Since your MIL is medically ill and I presume seeing a psychiatrist, the best person to advise you about this is her doctor.

Best of luck...

I am not surprised you are so disturbed . Your Mil needs help from a quaified doctor in this field . Please consult a good doctor who deals with sucidal cases.

Be polite and keep your distance from her untill she gets treatment .

How to deal with this?
I feel that my husbands parents are using their son. My husband is from India and I am from the USA. He obtained his greencard and citizenship through me after coming here. He is a physician and obtained his residency training. I worked to earn for our family for two years until he got his job. Then he applied for his parents to visit us on a visiting visa. RE:self centered inlaws
I agree they have completely double standards as I recently found out. I saw my husbands childhood photos when he was young. His parents claim they sacrificed everything for their kids and lived poor and behave like martyr parents. Got treated as free domestic servant. But the photos showed them dressed like Bollywood stars with watches and jewellery enjoying their life. O... - Tina [View Message]
