Feeding:Khichdi trouble!!

My 8-month old has been eating rice cereal & oatmeal cereal so far. I tried preparing khichdi for the first time with unsatisfactory results. I soaked 3 parts basmati+1 part moong dal for 2 hours and then cooked in a pot with lots of water until very soft (did not use pressure cooker). I then pureed in the food processor. The texture turned very gummy and was difficult to swallow. I tried adding some liquid - that helped some, but still was not easy to eat.
What went wrong-- please help.

Aarti, u can try by using two parts rice and two parts green moong dal instead of the yellow polished moong dal as polished moong dal also tends to give the sticky texture to the food. And add the rice and dal and let it soak for a longer time and then pressure cook it on slow without using the whistle and instead using a glass or katori on the lid of the pressure cooker. By doing this u will be able to make the khichdi as close to as it is made in an open container, which u tried in the beginning. ANd after cooking the try and blend the hot khichdi in the mixer. All the best

hello aarti, please avoid using basmati rice for infants. I read in many posts (long back) that it is not good for children. take care.

The recipe is also called pongal in south india, which is done in using rice 3 parts and moong dal 1 part, with this mixture add water in ratio 1: 3.

add some hing, salt, turmaric and pressure cook for 4 whistles. this will be directly fed with out putting in processor, coz of smooth texture. can add 1 spoon ghee.

Try it out and infants love this. take care

To a problem I had with khichdi, Sandhya (thank you) mentioned that basmati rice is not good for infants/children. I could not find any related posts. Can anybody provide more information or links to related posts.
Thanks.

cooker would have been the best to make it n its quick also. after blending if it is still thick (as it will be cos rice leave starch) then add boiled water to make it bit runny or this will best once its cooled down add plain curd this will even make it more tasty for your baby to eat n gummy thing wot u mention will also be sorted.
PS. try to add 1 teaspoon of tomato paste, even if u dont mind give a fry of onion n garlic at start so that khichdi has some taste.
i have always made it like this an is always perfect n has never soaked rice even a min just washed n add to cooker everything is approx. n it always turns out brill.
