Problems in School:Why is my daughter soooooooo slow?
2002-05-21
Name: MMMM

My 8 yrs old daughter does everything very slow, be it eating, studying. I think she spends time in between day-dreaming. When she sits doing her school home works, it always ends up with a fight between my wife and her. Sometimes i feel very sorry for her. My wife thinks that she deliberately wastes time. In shcool she is a good student, comes among the top in class in studying as well as other activities.

What do you think is her problem? Are we being a little unreasonable by shouting at her for being slow. Doesn't this shouting affect her development? But then what else to do?

Please let us know what u think....Thanks

this is one of my major worry as well. i have a 9yr old who is really slow in everything. the portions are rushed through in school and the job of explaining is left to the parents. i'm not a working mother and i spend maximum time explaining right from the basics and helping her with her studies. she does well in the exams b-ut its with a lot of effort on both our parts and because of her speed she hardly gets any time off to play. i'm really tensed for her. she goes to an icse school. i wonder if i should put her to a sslc school

Hi, You seem to be a caring father, good for you. Maybe if you and your wife develop a getting ready starategy with your child's involvement, then she wil have more control over her environment. Maybe she stalls as a way of getting attention. Working parents often tend to rush thru things and this stresses out the kid even further especially if she has problems at babysitting or at school. ANd with large class sizes and insensitive teachers, it is not easy for kids today.
You have your heart in the right place.Praise your child whenever she does things right, and I am sure she does these. the trick is to focus on her strengths and lavish praise on her, this will surely boost her confidence. get her help to pack dry snacks the evening before, fill water bottles and get her school bag ready in advance. Lead by example and we parents can be a powerful driving force for our kids.
Also look up barbara Coloroso's book` Kids are worth it' Inner discipline is discussed here and this is a very sensitive writer with years of experience in parenting and teaching

My son is also very slow, even at school also. His teacher writes very often in his classwork copy that he is too slow. We both are working and in the afternoon he stays with a servant at home. No servant continues for more than a year and he is again in new hands. He is 5 years old. He is not even interested in joining any extra curricular activities. Since he is not having much physical exercise he doesn't have good apitide also.I sometimes feel every thing we are forcing him to do but how long this will continue? Only 2-3 months back he started eating on his own. I get mentally and phisically frustreted with him. What shall I do?

Make him join some classes, even if he is not interested. Maybe he prefers watching the television, so prevent him from watching tv. Make him join tennis classes, so he will get exercise as well. Or swimming.. most kids love to swim. Don't just make him sit at home with the servants. That's the worst thing to do.

Let her learn things at her own pace. As long as she's doing alright in school, why does it matter if she's a little slow. So maybe she likes to daydream a little. there's nothing wrong with that - it fosters imagination. If she's sitting idle or eating her food, she doesnt require to concentrate, so her mind probably wanders. I would suggest you enroll her in some extra-curricular class or activity like dance or dramatics, which would keep her too busy to indulge in too much daydreaming. All-in-all, i dont think there's anything you need to worry about.
