Eating Problems:giving up bottles
2007-09-14
Name: Prity

My 2 yr old is still taking bottle to drink milk. I usually give him milk just before nap time, once before bettime and if needed, around dawn. Each time since he is sleepy, I have to give him a bottle, otherwise from a sippy cup he won' t drink more than 1-2 ounces. Does anynody have any idea on how to get him to give up bottles. He is a very fussy eater, takes me an hour sometimes to feed him for every meal. I don' t want to start him on a glass for milk, because for that it will take me a long time to sit and feed him milk. I work full time so I will be putting him in a daycare very soon and in there I think they use only sippy cups. Dr is also asking me to make him give up bottles. Any suggestions?

Hi All,
I have a 4 year old. i stopped giving him bottle when he was around 2 years.
one day he saw a cockroach. Next day we put some kunkidi(sheekakaya powder) powder on his bottle nipple, then told him cockroach has bitten that and we cannot use it any longer. From that day onwards never insisted for bottles.

here' s a thought...

kids around 2 and above are copycats. They mostly want to do everything like adults. So maybe you could try this on days you can make time (and yes he is old enough to do this.. trust me i have a 28 month old boy myself)
Start with snack times. give him a little milk in a kid size cup maybe a ounce at a time while you drink something yourself...tea/coffee.maybe you can even read a book at the same time to take the focus of the drinking. you may be surprised at what he accomplishes.
just a suggestion.....hope this helps

First try to shift his time of taking milk so that he does not have dependency on milk bottle to sleep. Try telling him stories to make him sleep.

I have a 3 year old. We stopped giving him bottle when he was around 2.5. We told him a story that all his bottles have been taken by a Monkey who has a very small baby to feed. He is now a big boy and can drink with a glass. He liked the idea that he is big whereas the monkey' s baby is too small. He never troubled us that he wants the bottle. Yes it took a lot of time to get his glass of milk fed. We started telling him story and the story would only continue if he sips the milk alongwith.

Hope this helps.
