Baby's Growth and Development in Week 19 (Fifth Month)

Learn about the developmental milestones that a baby is expected to achieve by week 19 (during the 5th month). Also find some tips for boosting her development.

It is week 19 – your baby is approaching to 5 months of celebrating life outside the womb. By now, your baby has begun to develop a sense of humor, for example, if you pop a toy out of a box or pop your head from underneath the blanket with a surprising note, which would make your baby laugh out loud or giggle happily. Make him or her giggle, smile and laugh more – and enjoy with your baby more as you can connect to him or her more than before.

Picky Baby

Your baby understands enjoying attention now. By week 19, your infant has also become very choosy now as he or she has started recognizing people around him. Your kid will give smile to greet strangers depending if he or she likes that stranger. Your baby will show his or her disliking to the stranger by starting to cry if the stranger takes him or her on lap or arms.

Strong Muscles

At week 19, your baby gets stronger – he or she gets better control over head and neck. This allows your baby to enjoy new view. Try to take him or her near the window and enjoy the clouds and stars in the sky, cars on the road, or the birds on the trees. You may find your baby is able to stand easily while holding onto your hands. Your baby will be able to pull himself or herself up with the chair by now – these are very good leg strengthening exercises your baby will do by his or her own to get ready to walk or run in the near future.

Less Sleep

Your baby does not want to sleep much now. Some babies at this week will take two long naps, while some will take many small naps – though you would find it a little difficult to make your cute piece of joy fall asleep unless he or she is very tired of playing. The total amount of sleep hours matters more now rather than the number and length of naps. You have to try new tips and tricks, for example, have to be more expert in lullabies, rhymes, reading stories, etc. – all to make your baby fall asleep.

Play More

Often the silence around will make you feel that your baby is sleeping, but in reality, he or she is busy in playing on her own. At week 19, your baby is now an independent thinker and has learnt to be self-reliant. Your baby can entertain himself or herself – though chances are high that your baby will prefer your company more, so your sight can make him or her give up his or her own idea of games. To allow your baby to learn more from playing on his or her own, restrain yourself from disturbing him or her when he or she is in deep play mode.

Music Does It All

Whether your baby is crying or whining or kicking, he or she will stop what he or she is doing when he or she hears you hum a lovely music. Music fascinates every baby from a very early time, when babies are even a few minutes or hours or weeks or months old. But at week 19, your baby will listen to you very carefully when you sing – it is because of all those neural connections in his or her small brain that soothes him or her every time he or she listens you sing.

Travelling Is Fun Now

Your baby is going to complete 5 months very soon – take him or her for small trips now! Your infant is totally ready to enjoy the car ride now from his or her capsule or rear-facing car seat with safe seat belts, as he or she can sit face-forward easily, so now your car trip has become easier and more stress-free. Include a soft-toy, a kid-friendly CD, a bunny rag for an emergency shade cloth and a board book to make car trip with your baby more exciting.
If you are travelling by other modes of transport, you must make sure that you make arrangement accordingly. Take care that you carry all the travel essentials to make sure that your child is comfortable throughout the entire journey.

How to boost a baby’s development during fifth month? What kinds of toys are suitable for babies during the 5th month of their development? Discuss here.
