Baby's Growth and Development in Week 16 (Fourth Month)

Find about the developmental milestones that a baby may attain by the completion of 16 weeks (four months) of her development. Also find tips for boosting your baby’s development during this phase.

Your baby’s body development speeds up at four months old – wait, what? It’s 16 weeks, already! Yes, it is – so along with improved senses, your baby will be experiencing the early stages of her first teeth and also you can observe early signs of speech development in your infant. Her stomach will grow bigger, so you do not have to feed her frequently. She can drink more milk during each feed, so you can rest more now and spend more time observing your piece of joy growing day-by-day.

Improved Vision

Babies can see better now – the sharpness of the images increase while the fuzziness goes off. Still they like to look at things closely. Your baby can see colours since birth but by week 16, your baby is able to differentiate between different and also similar shades. This is the perfect time when you can introduce more colourful books to your kids – they would love looking at them. Also, they would love to play more with colourful toys now.

Improved Speech

It is already 4 months now, and you can already decode the sounds your baby makes. Now you would notice that your baby can able to make out the sounds of vowel and consonant. Babies usually make j and k sounds when they feel happy, but when they are unhappy, they tend to make p and b sounds. This is the time they try to imitate your sounds, for example, if you say “woohoo”, they try their best to make the same type of sound and say it back.

Tend to Roll

By the completion of the fourth month babies can arch their back while laying on their front – this is considered as a very advantageous exercise as it can help develop their neck muscles and other muscles that they would need to sit up. In a few weeks’ time, they would crawl, stand and walk using the same muscles. Encourage your baby to roll by putting her favourite toy by her side so that she tends to roll over to get it – you cannot force your baby to roll but can keep encouraging like this, and you baby would roll over very likely now.

First Tooth

Now it is the time that so many teething issues would be a little worth, as your baby will get her first teeth. The first symptom that their first tooth is out is the red patches on their gums and you would also see them dribbling a lot. Usually, the bottom front tooth pops out at the first. Your baby will start rubbing her fist continuously in the mouth and will keep rubbing their mouths – this also indicates that your baby’s first tooth is almost going to pop out or has just popped out.

Improved Sense of Touch

Your baby has an improved sense of touch now. She would love to feel different types of texture now, whether it is furry or shiny or silky or crinkly or lumpy. Whatever, your baby will touch, she will also test that object. Whether the texture of the object does or does not fascinate your infant, she will straight take that object in her mouth. So anytime you have to keep the surroundings of your growing piece of joy safe and clean – you never know what goes in her mouth.

It is a good time to introduce music to your infant as music instils intellectual and social development in kids. Keep your infant occupied for a long time by just giving her a muslin cloth and observe how she enjoy its touch – she will hold it, suck on it, and will be fascinated by discovering what happens when she scrunches it up. Enjoy every growing moment with your kid.

What kind of growth milestones do babies achieve by the fourth month of their development? How to aid a four-months-old baby’s development? Discuss here.
