As per this legend a poor Brahmin and schoolmate of Sri Krishna, Kuchela who was also known as Sudama visited Krishna with the objective of asking him for some financial help. He carried with him a handful of “Poha” or beaten rice which was one of the favourites of Lord Krishna. Upon reaching the palace at Dwarka, Kuchela was awestruck by the wealth and opulence he saw and became ashamed to give the ‘Poha’ to Krishna. However, it did not escape the notice of Krishna who grabbed the small bag held by his schoolmate and started eating it. Thereafter the Lord treated his friend like God. Kuchela in turn was completely overwhelmed by Krishna’s love and affection. He forgot about the financial assistance and went back home empty handed. Upon reaching his village, Kuchela found that his old hut had been replaced by a palace. His wife and children were dressed in new clothes. Kuchela then understood that all the transformation had happened due to “Krishna Leela”. Thereafter people have started observing the day on which Kuchela met Sri Krishna as Akshaya Tritiya.
