Things to Know About Attention Disorder in Children

Attention deficit disorder can affect the academic performance of children. It can also affect their overall growth and develop. Therefore, parents must be aware of its signs and adopt right measures. Learn more about the things that parents must know about this disorder.

Attention deficit is a common yet complex mental health disorder with the capability of affecting your child’s success in school and relationships. One thing most important to be noted down here is that not all attention problems are ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).

If your child forgets her homework at times, day dreams during class, acts without thinking or seems restless during dinner, it is normal. These are signs of attention deficit, but this does not mean that your child has to undergo a treatment. Sometimes children show minor symptoms, but before coming to any conclusion, it is important parents know the signs of attention deficit disorder.

What is attention deficit disorder (ADD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)?

Some children just cannot sit still, might never listen to you, may not follow instructions and come up with inappropriate comments at unsuitable times. Often these children are characterized as lazy, undisciplined and as trouble makers or problem children. These children may have attention deficit disorder. This disorder makes it difficult for the child to prevent spontaneous response to any activity.

Facts about the signs of the disorder

The signs of attention deficit disorder can be seen by the time your child is seven. However, most of the signs seem like normal kid behaviour and it becomes really difficult to mark the difference. So, if you mark any or more of these symptoms in your child, but that is seen some time or the other, it is not ADD. If these symptoms are present in most of the situations, you need to take a closer look. Once you understand the reasons, you will be able to find creative solutions and focus on encouraging strengths.

Myths and facts on attention deficit disorder

1. Every child with attention deficit disorder is hyperactive

This is not true. Some children with ADD are inattentive and hyperactive and they appear to be dreamy and unenthusiastic.

2. Kids with ADHD are always inattentive

It is not that kids with ADHD never pay attention because they are seen concentrating on activities they like.

3. Kids suffering with ADHD have control on their behaviour

Children with ADHD may appear to be good but disobedient, but this does not mean that they are doing everything in purpose.

4. ADHD gets cured with time

ADHD gets carried on to adulthood. So, it is advisable not to wait because timely medical attention would help minimize the symptoms in your child.

5. Medication is the best remedy

Even though medicines are prescribed for attention deficit disorder, behaviour therapy, proper nutrition, right amount of attention, support at home and school, exercise and education also make huge difference.

Seven common signs of attention deficit disorder

  1. Kids with the disorder are self-focused – This is one of the most common signs where the child is incapable of recognizing other person’s needs and desires.

  2. They are unable to control their emotions – Children suffering from attention deficit disorder find it difficult to keep their emotions in check.

  3.  They cannot sit still – Fidgetiness is quite common in such kids. They run around, squirm in their chair or fidget when forced to sit.

  4.  They have problem finishing the tasks – These children show interest in many things, but do not finish one on time.

  5.  Lack focus – Children with attention deficit disorder lack focus even if someone is talking directly to her.

  6.  Day dreaming – One of the contrast sign of ADD is that these children become quieter and less interactive.

  7.  Making careless mistakes – These children cannot follow instructions especially those which require proper planning and execution.
All children exhibit one or more symptoms at some point. You should be alarmed only if you see these signs occurring frequently and if these are affecting your child’s performance in school. The most important thing is that ADD is treatable. So, if your child suffers from this, consult the doctor and determine the best course of action for your child in time.
