sleeping on back pregnancy

This article explains the implications of sleeping on back during pregnancy. The article also explains about the sleeping postures to be avoided during pregnancy so that mothers give birth to a healthy child.

Megha spends sleepless nights but she is very worried about her own health and health of her baby because she understands less sleep for prolonged days would definitely take toll on her health and would harm her baby as well. She wants to get rid of discomforts she faces during sleep so that she can be proud mother of a healthy and fit baby. She had a habit of sleeping on her back and wants to know if she needs to change her habit immediately.

Is it Safe to Sleep on Back during Pregnancy?

During the later stages of pregnancy, would-be mothers experience a lot of discomforts and one of the most common one is sleeplessness. Almost every night would be moms feel that they cannot have a comfortable position during their sleep. Some pregnant women find it comfortable to sleep on their back but the ultimate question is if it is at all safe for a pregnant woman to lie down on her back.
As per researches, most of the women have experience very disturbed sleep during their pregnancy period than the period when they are not pregnant. Pregnant women and new moms experience insomnia as compared to other women. Those who are in a habit of sleeping on their back or on stomach have to change the habit to ensure no harm is caused to the unborn baby.

Concerns Regarding Sleeping on Back during Pregnancy

During later part of pregnancy sleeping on back is of great concern. The foetus size increases during 2nd and 3rd trimesters. When would-be moms lie on their back, the weight of entire uterus makes the blood circulation to the heart slower. So, foetus does not get required amount of blood. Less blood flow to foetus would result in lack of oxygen and nutrients in foetus and health of the foetus would get affected.
When a pregnant woman sleeps on her back then uterus creates pressure on the intestine, spine and important blood vessels. This excessive pressure leads to digestive problems in would-be moms. Shortness of breath and haemorrhoids are also caused when would-be moms sleep on their back. Lying on back for prolonged time would cause dizziness and lower back pain in would-be mothers.
As suggested by a new study, pregnant women who sleep on their back during advanced pregnancy period have high risk of stillbirth if other risk factors are already there. When pregnancy loss happens after 20th week of pregnancy it is referred as stillbirth. Impaired foetal growth is one of the main risk factors that can lead to stillbirth.

Preferable Sleep Position during Pregnancy

Most of the doctors advise side sleeping as the most preferable sleeping position for would-be moms. It helps better blood flow into the placenta and baby gets required oxygen and nutrients. Side sleeping is not very easy for all at least not for those who are not into the habit of it. It is better to start practicing side sleeping since the early days of pregnancy so that by the time it is 2nd trimester, would-be moms feel comfortable in this position. To sleep comfortably, pregnancy pillows can be used. Keeping pillows at the back helps would-be moms in getting more support making it more comfortable to lie down on their side for prolonged hours.
Sleeping positions vary according to personal preference but would-be moms cannot afford to sleep in all positions. Doctors suggest that after the first trimester of pregnancy, would-be moms should stop sleeping on back or on stomach and start sleeping on side. Sleeping on side is considered as the best sleeping position for pregnant women and most doctors recommend this posture. Along with proper sleeping positions, healthy habits like regular exercises recommended by doctor and avoiding caffeinated drinks would help would-be moms to get better sleep.
