Falls during pregnancy is a common concern and you must be careful while pregnant and aware of certain falls that can spell danger. Read on to know the tips you can follow to avert the falls in pregnancy.

It is normal for you to panic if you had experienced a fall during pregnancy. However, you can relax, as your body is designed to protect your little one from such accidents. Your injury needs to be very severe to be able to hurt your baby directly before hurting you. Your uterus walls are thick and the muscles lining the uterus shall keep your little one safe. Amniotic fluid inside also shall give the much needed cushioning effect to your baby.

Surrounded by amniotic fluid, tough membranes, the elastic uterus and the strong abdomen guarded with muscles and bones, your baby is absolutely safe. The baby could be hurt only if you yourself have sustained serious injuries.

Additionally your uterus is pushed behind the pelvic bone in the initial phases of pregnancy that means additional protection for her.

When You Need to be Worried?

You shall be worried if you receive a direct blow to your tummy during pregnancy.  If you are having contractions, vaginal bleeding, abdominal tenderness or leakage of amniotic fluid, then there is something to worry about.

You must look for medical assistance in the following cases and reassure that your baby is fine.
  • Notify your doctor in case you experience sever pain or bleeding after the fall. This becomes particularly important if you have experienced a direct blow to your tummy.

  • Talk to your doctor if you feel vaginal bleeding or find amniotic fluid leaking.

  • In case you notice pain in your pelvic region or the lower abdomen.

  • In case you feel the foetal movement has reduced after your fall.

There is nothing to worry, as your baby shall be fine in most of the cases. However, you would always want the reassurances from your healthcare provider.

Why Fall Happens during Pregnancy?

If you had a fall in pregnancy, there is nothing much to worry about, as this is common and plenty of women has experienced the same at some point of time in their pregnancies too. Now here are some reasons why falls are so common in pregnancy.
  • Pregnant mothers feel dizzy and may often lose balance as a result of it. This is generally common in the first phase of pregnancy.

  • Ligaments of the feet tend to get lose and stretched. This cause swelling and you may tip and fall.

  • Since you are carrying the additional weight on your hips and abdomen, you get more prone to falls.

  • Your centre of gravity shifts when you are pregnant. This makes it difficult for you to keep a balance.

How to Avoid Falls during Pregnancy?

You need to be extra careful while pregnant and make sure to take good care of yourself and the little life developing inside. Here are some simple tips you can follow to avert the falls. Take a look:
  • Stop wearing heals right from the beginning of your pregnancy. Wear flat shoes that offer you better balance.

  • When walking on the road, be extra careful. Be careful of the pits if you are walking on a bumpy road. Be sure to be slow and hold on to something when you are walking over a slippery surface.

  • Take support of your partner while taking escalators.

  • Be careful while exercising. It is better to avoid the ones that are vigorous and need plenty of effort.

So, you must have overcome much of the fear associated with falls during pregnancy. In case you still have some questions, get in touch with your doctor for his expert advice. He shall consider plenty of factors like your age, your pregnancy stage, position of fall and carry out an ultrasound if necessary to rule out all possible dangers. He shall suggest you the right measures and offer medications as well if necessary to ensure complete safety of your baby. The surface on which you had a fall shall determine the impact it had on you and your baby. In many cases women have tripped and fallen from stairs, but the babies are reported to have been born absolutely normal. So take right care of yourself and be always safe for having a healthy and a happy pregnancy!
