The first trimester of pregnancy is a very sensitive period as the foetus is in its early developmental stage. It is the time when the major organs are in the initial formation stage, not to forget the development of the body systems. Therefore, adequate precaution needs to be taken so that the foetal development is not disrupted at any cost. It is not that you need to live in a bubble and keep worrying about its safety, or stay stationed on your couch during these first three months. It is just that you must be well informed and take the necessary sensible precautions. Given below are a few of them:

Stay Away from Certain Lifestyle Habits –

Let us have a look at the lifestyle habits which can prove harmful during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Alcohol – It is difficult to find a medical advice on how much alcohol is permissible during pregnancy. But the adverse effects of alcohol are well charted out. If the mother is addicted to alcohol consumption during pregnancy, the baby is risked to be born with Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). In such cases, the foetus has an abnormally slow growth and is born with abnormal facial features. He also grows up with serious learning disabilities. There is also no cure for FAS. 

Caffeine – Caffeine is a strong stimulant and can have different effect on different individuals. It is thus best avoided during the first trimester as the exact effect of caffeine on the foetus is still under research. According to some studies, caffeine consumption by the mother is said to cause a premature birth and the baby weighs less than normal and they are also found to have a series of birth defects.

Visible adverse effects of caffeine on pregnant women are sleeping disorders, anxiety, irritability, nervousness and irregular heartbeat. Thus it is advisable to cut down or eliminate beverages and food with caffeine content. Also avoid non-prescription medicines that have caffeine content, mostly pills that are used to treat cold, allergy and headache.

CigarettesSmoking is extremely harmful for good health, more so for pregnant women. Mothers who are addicted to smoking inevitably give birth to low weight babies and the babies are born with multiple disorders like prone to infections, or low immunity, feeding and breathing issues along with the fatal sudden infant death syndrome. So precaution must be taken that the mother is kept away from passive smoking as well, as they have no less severe impact on both the mother and the baby.

Sauna – Hot tubs and saunas must be avoided during the first trimester of pregnancy. Since these involve staying in an environment that is above normal body temperature. The high temperature in fact hampers the normal development of the foetus.

Avoid Seafood – Though seafood and certain type of fishes are good sources of essential fat, one need to be careful while selecting the type of fish or seafood as they are known to contain a high amount of mercury. Swordfish, mackerel and tile fish are to be best avoided. The consumption of albacore or white tuna must not be more than once a week.

Herbs and Medicines – Certain herbs can be detrimental to foetus development like, passion flower, saw palmetto, pennyroyal and black cohosh are known to cause miscarriage, premature birth and painful contractions. Similarly over-the-counter medications during the first trimester must be avoided at all cost, regardless of how minute the ailment is. Always take medicines after consulting your physician. Also avoid x-rays as the rays can severely harm the development of the foetus.

Right care is extremely important during the first trimester of pregnancy as it is a crucial phase of baby’s development. Right diet and healthy lifestyle must be adopted in order to prevent mishaps. Also make it a point to stay away from dog or cat litter and pesticides, insecticides and paints as it may prove harmful for your pregnancy.

Throughout the pregnancy there is required special care for that pregnant lady but more require during starting stage because it is foundation of baby. There must have to change in their daily routine life like

DO during pregnancy: Eat healthy foods, Exercise regularly, Take rest, be positive, Drink plenty of water.

Avoid during pregnancy: junk food, quit smoking and alcohol, cut down coffee, sea foods, hot baths and saunas.

It is very important for all pregnant women to take care during pregnancy. what you eat is most important. do not try anything that has an unknown ingredient or something that can cause harm during pregnancy.
