Drugs for Vaginal/Urethral Infections

Expectant mothers frequently suffer from vaginal problems. If you suffer vaginal or urethral infection, then read on to know the signs and drugs used to treat such vaginal problems.

Drugs like broad spectrum anti-fungals, include Clotrimazole. They increase the permeability of fungal cells and inhibit synthesis of ergosterol and damage cell membrane of fungi.

You might be aware that the urethra is a short tube that transmits urine from bladder to outside of the body. The urinary system consists of muscles, nerves and organs that are responsible for accumulating, storing and releasing urine. The urine is carried through the uterus to the bladder. The bladder opens into the urethra. The normal vagina opens behind the urethra. It is a reservoir for different organism.

Expectant Moms are at Risk

In pregnant women, the infection mostly occurs in urethras and urinary bladders. Almost 10% of the expectant mothers suffer vaginal or urethral infection at some point of time during their pregnancies. The most common symptom of vaginal infection is abnormal vaginal discharge.

These infections are common in women of age 20 to 50. The infections are generally caused by bacteria from your vagina, skin or rectum that enter your urethra and move upstream. There are medications that treat this infection. Before having a look into them, let us look at what causes it.

Causes of Vaginal Infections

Overgrowth of bacteria in vagina often leads to vaginal problems. In pregnant women, hormones lead to changes in urinary tract. Hormonal imbalances lead to higher estrogen while you are pregnant causing the infection. If you have unpleasant odour from vaginal discharge or if it differs in consistency, then you can contact your obstetrician. It might be the probable cause of vaginal infection.

If you have vaginal infection, then you can expect any of the below symptoms:
  • pain in pubic area
  • bloody urine
  • foul smelling urine
  • burning sensation while urinating and while having sex
  • urinary urgency

The symptoms can also be accompanied with vomiting, fever, lower stomach cramps, nausea, contractions, and chills. All these require immediate medication.

Recommendations

A doctor usually examines the vaginal area and look for possible signs of infection. He might also suggest you to go for investigations including urine culture.

It is being recommended by the physicians that infection in urethral infections can be treated with effective antibiotics, if detected early. However, if the expectant mom fails to recognize the symptoms of a vaginal infection, then it can potentially translate into kidney infections. There are a range of antibiotics that can cure urethral or vaginal infectivity.

Antibiotics

Oral antibiotics and antibacterial vaginal creams (as per an obstetrician’s prescription) are effective in curing urethral infections.

Often, drugs having a phosphoric acid derivative are beneficial in treating uncomplicated infections. However, the selection of antibiotics depends on urine culture sensitivities.

In case of major complications, a patient is advised to be admitted in hospital. Often, surgical treatment is indicated for expecting mothers having urethral infections. However, these cases are rare. Surgical intervention is the last resort for pregnant women.

Usually, antibiotics are most effective to cure the urethral infections. After consuming the drugs for these infections, you should necessarily feel better in your second day of medication. However, if your symptoms get worsened even after the third day, you should necessarily appoint the doctor.

Selection of Drugs

Your obstetrician would know which antibiotics are ideal for urinary infections and which may worsen the infection. The choice of drugs depends a lot on a woman’s allergies. Also, based on what trimester of pregnancy you are in, your physician recommends you the drugs. Also, follow up is the best way to remain healthy while you are pregnant. Doctors usually prescribe a regular course of antibiotics for 3-7 days at a stretch.

Go for Doctor’s Suggestions

Though you may be advised to take herbs, supplements, vitamins and over-the-counter medicines for your vaginal infections, do not get carried away by the advertisements of the drugs as well as verbal and unauthentic suggestions. It’s always advisable to go for prescribed drugs by your doctor.
Be sure that you routinely take the drugs that your doctor suggests. In case of non-adherence of the prescription, the infection might recur or get complicated. Also not taking the full course of antibiotics encourages development of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics.
