Weight Gain and Baby's Development (Second Month of Pregnancy)

Weight Gain and Baby

By the end of the second month of pregnancy the foetus looks like a tiny human infant. All the organs of foetus start developing. Read on to know what happens to the foetus during the second month of pregnancy.

How much weight should I have gained by the end of this month?

You should not have gained any weight this month, because the baby is still too little to require any extra nutrition.

The baby or the foetus at this stage is very small and hence does not require any nutrition. Therefore, you should not have gained any weight this month. It is a myth that a woman should start gaining weight as soon as she gets pregnant. Hence, do not be unduly worried about weight gain in the second month. What is important for you is to eat healthy, stay happy and remain stress free as far as possible.

It may be pertinent to point out here that many women actually lose a little weight during this stage of pregnancy. One of the symptoms of pregnancy anorexia, combined with frequent sickness till takes its toll and results in the pregnant woman losing weight. This is quite normal and nothing to worry about. Most of these changes happening in your body are due to significant hormonal changes. The body tries its best to cope with the changes and manages to expel excess toxins which cause frequent urges to urinate, gas and increase in vaginal secretion.

What other changes happen in the mother’s body during or after the second month of pregnancy?

By the end of the second month, most women start feeling pregnant. As a consequence of enhanced levels of estrogens and progesterone in the body, milk ducts in the breasts increase. This may result in the breasts getting swollen and becoming tender. Most pregnant women experience morning sickness or nausea during the day. Mood swings are common during this stage of pregnancy.

Feeling of tiredness, exhaustion and fatigue will normally last throughout the first trimester of pregnancy. Frequent urination or the urge to pass urine will continue and interfere with your sleep pattern at night. Hence, you must make up for any lost sleep by taking short naps in the afternoon.

How is my baby growing?

The second month is particularly crucial for the development of a baby. Birth defects caused due to drugs, viruses, or environmental factors such as pesticides normally happen during or after the second month.

An embryo grows very rapidly during the second month. By the end of the 2nd month, all of a baby's major body organs and systems, including the lungs, stomach, brain and liver start developing. The first bone cells appear during this period. Eyelids start forming and grow but remain tightly closed. The inner ear, ankles, toes, wrists, fingers, and sexual organs begin developing.

By the end of the second month of pregnancy, the baby resembles a tiny human infant. It is about 11/4 inch long from head to bottom and weighs about 1/3rd of an ounce. In case it is a boy, the penis starts forming. If case of girls the vagina starts developing.

From the beginning of the third month the embryo is referred to as a foetus. If you get an ultrasound scan done you will be able to see the baby waving and wiggling. However, you will not feel any movements and hence do not expect the baby to kick yet.

What you must do during 2nd month of pregnancy?

Majority of miscarriages happen in the initial stages of pregnancy. Hence, you should avoid lifting heavy objects and exerting yourself physically. To cope with tiredness and exhaustion make changes in your lifestyle so as to give your body ample rest and stay healthy. Stay away from drinking and smoking.
