1 December is observed as World AIDS Day to spread awareness of AIDS around the globe. Let us have a look at the significance of world AIDS day and themes for World AIDS Day 2012. World AIDS Day is observed on 1 December every year. The primary objective is to raise awareness amongst people all over the world, those who are affected as well as those who are not. The spreading of awareness regarding
HIV/AIDS is extremely vital even in today’s world, when we consider that medical science has progressed and people have enhanced awareness levels.
The prime focus of the World AIDS Day is to demonstrate solidarity through private and public partnerships and programmes. There are still countries and pockets around the world where people are falling prey to this endemic mostly due to lack of adequate awareness.
Themes For the World AIDS Day (2011 to 2015)
The current theme that is 2011 to 2015, which has been decided by the World Health Organisation or WHO is “Getting to zero: zero new HIV infections. Zero discrimination. Zero AIDS related deathsâ€. The fact that the World AIDS Campaign now focuses on “Zero AIDS related deathsâ€, marks a significant strategy that treatment for AIDS must be available to all people affected by it, cutting across countries or geographical locations. Besides, this theme also puts a viable responsibility on the respective governments to act promptly whenever they are informed with any AIDS related health issues.
Prominent Nation Affected by AIDS
Since Africa has been prominent in the list of nations affected by AIDS, this is a call on the African governments along with the Abuja Declarations, so that the responsibility of the state to protect their people from AIDS is not overlooked or ignored.
For 2012 December 1, the theme is “Working together for an AIDS-free generationâ€.
Inception And the Journey
The AIDS virus has baffled the scientific researchers since its very discovery, due the myriad manifestations of the symptoms and the speed with which the patients succumbed. The first body to be formed in respect to spreading awareness and treatment opportunities was the International AIDS Society which was formed in 1988. Since then the World AIDS Day themes have changed that actually depicts the manner in which the campaign has progressed over the years. But, we are still facing the challenge of the virus existing in some parts of the world profusely and the danger of it getting spread is always high.
Every possible measure must be taken to stop this pandemic and awareness is the best possible method to stop the spread and educate people on how they can protect themselves from the possible spread of the infection.
Why is World AIDS Day Observed?
Another important point that needs to be emphasized here, observing World AIDS Day does not mean that we segregate people who have been infected by the virus. This is a day when we commemorate those who have passed on succumbing to the diseases and thereby
World AIDS Day is today recognised as the most observed international health days around the world. The significance lies in the fact that this disease has the potential to emerge as a global pandemic and can readily reach the person affected to near fatal condition, besides not to overlook, how rampantly the infection can spread, if left untreated or ignored.
UNAIDS has been the leader in this campaign to spread awareness since its inception in 2004, and since then the World AIDS Campaign’s Global Steering Committee selects a theme for every World AIDS Day. Today what we require is a thorough involvement and active participation of all members of the society so that the awareness levels are high and people, who are susceptible to AIDS, for whatever reasons, are adequately protected. Therefore, this should be a campaign with universal participation, so that this menace can be effectively dealt with.
