How to Save Water

22nd March is observed as World Water Day. Not only on this day but also on each day we must make an effort to save water. On this occasion find out some common tips for saving water.

It is a wrong notion that most of us are living with, that water conservation or saving water is not that important. We fail to realise a simple fact that clean water is not an infinite natural resource. Looking at the current scenario, environmentalists and scientists are afraid that very soon we will run out of clean drinking water.

A lot of damage is already done, and if we are to live as responsible people, we need to take adequate measures individually in order to ensure that our future generations are not deprived of water. Else it would mark a sad end of human civilisation. Researches and studies are on across the world, on discovering and ideating various ways that can be simple yet effective in saving water.

Tips for Saving Water

Given below are some of them that we can consider in our day-to-day activities:

Using Collected Water for Washing Purpose

While washing clothes or dishes, we usually use running water. We can save a lot of water if we collect some in tumblers and wash the clothes or utensils in them and then wash it clean by rinsing them in another tumbler of water. You use the same method for washing fruits and vegetables. Instead of washing them under running water, you can wash them with water collected in a pan. Instead of taking shower, you can use water in a bucket for taking bath, this method will save lots of water.

Using Upgraded Electric Appliances

The common electric appliances like air-conditioner, fridge and ice-maker waste a lot of water through flow. We can upgrade these appliances that use air, instead of water.

Similarly when we are using dishwashers and washing machines, we need to ensure that they are eco friendly and consume less water and run them only when they are fully loaded. We can also save a lot of energy in that way.

Checking for Water Leakages

Always check that your water-pipes and pumps are not leaking anywhere. Also don’t forget to check your sprinklers and hoses for possible leakages. If you have a pool or a spa cover them, this will save water.

Proper Use of Sprinklers

We all use sprinklers on our lawns and more often than not, we end up watering the outside of our house, sidewalks and the streets. We can be careful here and use the water only on the lawns.

Watering Plants or Garden at Right Time

When you are watering your garden, make sure that it is during the morning or the evening. This way the earth will retain more water as evaporation is minimum at these times of the day.

Planting Shrubs on Sloping Land

If we have some sloping land or isolated strip of land that cannot be watered, it is better not to build a turf on it. Instead, you can plant some shrubs on those areas. It helps in water conservation.

Compost Your Garbage

Minimising the use of garbage disposal also effectively prevents wastage of water. Consider composting all your vegetable waste, it will save water.

Planting in Fall Season

Whether you own a farmland or a garden, it is advisable to plant during the fall. Since the weather is cooler with ample rainfall, it reduces the use of watering trees, thereby saving water.

There are innumerable other ways in which we can save water. It is basically becoming aware of the fact that water conservation is necessary and that we need to fulfil our responsibility to this effect. Creating proper awareness programmes and realising the necessity to do our own bit can bring about marked improvement in the environmental conditions. After all, it is not a very pretty picture that the environmentalists uphold when they express their concerns of the status of our planet and the impact it will render on earth on the years to come, due to shortage of water.

Water has become a priceless commodity and we must save it. All efforts even minor ones can help in saving a lot of water as each drop counts. I on my part never use showers for bathing as it is a wastage of water. I also repair leaky taps and faucets.
