How to Prevent Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes can give rise to complications during pregnancy. Therefore, women must take right preventive measures to avoid acquiring it during pregnancy. Read on to find tips for preventing gestational diabetes during pregnancy.

Gestational diabetes is an illness found in pregnant women when insulin production is more in blood. You may be aware of diabetes type 1 and type 2, but you may be hearing about this type for the first time. This type of diabetes is found in pregnant women during their second trimester by 24th week.
When you are expecting a baby, your body produces extra insulin. But the hormones released from the placenta during pregnancy restrict the action of that insulin. In such situation, if that extra insulin is not used by the body then glucose level in blood will increase and can cause gestational diabetes.
Pregnant women’s pancreas makes three times more of normal insulin for overcoming the effect of hormones produced in pregnancy. This condition is normally found in women during pregnancy and not before conceiving. Best part of this is that it disappears after baby is born.
You may think it will affect your baby. It can because over production of blood sugar leads to overgrowth of foetus. So, mothers will get high blood pressure or more fluid formation in womb creating increased risk of premature delivery. An uncontrolled case can cause sudden demise of foetus inside the womb. But the best part is if gestational diabetes is found at early stage and properly managed during pregnancy, risk of complication is lowered. Most obstetricians suggest expecting mothers to maintain control over sugar intake even if they do not have gestational diabetes.
Generally, a healthy diet and few exercises can keep you away from gestational diabetes. Here are some other preventive tips for gestational diabetes:

1. Early Parental Care

If you are overweight and planning to get pregnant, then first try to reduce your extra weight for a healthy body. It will reduce the risk of getting this diabetes. Usually, doctors do gestational diabetes test in 24th to 28th weeks of pregnancy which help in detecting and curing it much early. But if your doctor has not done till now then ask your doctor to do it as a preventive measure. There are certain symptoms through which you can know whether you are at the risk of this diabetes, like:
  • Being Overweight
  • Genetic history of diabetes
  • Previous history of delivering an overweight baby
  • History of diabetes before pregnancy
To detect this diabetes, blood sugar test should be done during 24th to 28th week of pregnancy.

2. Exercise

Regular exercise can help you to avoid the risk of getting diabetes. It allows your body to produce more glucose helping against resistance of insulin by pregnancy hormones. You can ask your doctor about the type of exercise you can do for not getting this diabetes.

3. Diet

Diet is the other important factor that can help in controlling blood sugar level. Eating healthy and avoiding too much of sugary foods is important. Have those foods that can give you much of carbohydrate. Fresh vegetables, fruits, pasta, bread, rice and cereals are great during pregnancy but in moderate amount. You can also have high fibre content foods in small amount frequently for avoiding much fluctuation in level of blood sugar.

4. Medication

If the above measures are not working, one must go for proper medication after consulting a doctor. Medication is the only way to control your blood sugar level. In some situations doctor may suggest to take insulin injection during pregnancy to control the over production of insulin.
Have check-up regularly to know the change in foetuses health and size as well as your weight and blood pressure. Gestational diabetes can lead to more complication in your pregnancy, so have a control over your weight and food.
