Artificial insemination is advocated
in cases of oligospermia. Oligospermia is a condition in which the
sperm count in the ejaculate is low. This condition can be the result of
overheated testicles, by hot baths or anatomical causes like a varicocele.
How can oligospermia
be treated
One of the first things that a man
in this condition should do is to cool down his testicles. It is recommended
that they wear the boxer shorts type of underwear rather than close
fitting Y-fronts so as to permit more air to circulate around the testicles.
The treatment of cold water therapy has proved to be beneficial in about
half the men when properly performed.
There are two medical treatments
for oligospermia. The first of these is Artificial Insemination by Husband
(A.I.H.). The other option is the possibility of in-vitro fertilisation
(I.V.F.). Very low sperm counts are used to fertilise the eggs retrieved
for I.V.F., the semen sample being deliberately diluted. If the sperm count
is already very low, but the quality of the count is satisfactory, I.V.F.
would seem to be a very reasonable form of treatment. The major I.V.F.
clinics are accepting couples where severe oligospermia is the apparent
cause of the infertility.
