Celebrities with Curves

In a time when 'thin is in', some celebrities are flaunting their curves. Read on to find out how these women are breaking tradition.

When you look at any runway show on television, virtually all the models have the same body structure. Each one is tall and extremely thin. If you switch the channels, the heroine of a movie or the female lead of a TV show look the same too. Almost all female celebrities focus on being thin. Since female celebrities are role models, their body image influences girls and young women. Consequently, many young women are dieting and working out to achieve that celebrity body image.
There are some celebrities, who refuse to conform to this tradition. These women believe that being 'curvy' makes them more attractive. Here are some celebrity women who are breaking the traditional mould.

The Early Trendsetters

The current 'thin' look was started by fashion model Twiggy, during the seventies. Her waif-like appearance captivated and spawned a generation of young girls, who wanted to be just like her. Within a few years, the definition of 'beauty' revolved around just how thin a person could get. Diet plans and exercise routines sprang up, promising to deliver toned limbs and a washboard tummy.
Even in those years, there were curvaceous celebrities, who captivated the attention of the opposite sex. Women aspired to be like them so they could achieve the same effect. The most well-known curvy actress of yesteryear is Sophia Loren. The classic Italian beauty was the epitome of the full-bodied woman. Even with her rounded figure, the actress had no qualms about being attired in minimal clothing, and has acted in a number of movies that required her to bare some skin.

The New Generation

In the last few years, some celebrities have emerged who are thoroughly unapologetic about their curvy bodies. Jennifer Lopez was among the first of the modern women to tread this path. In the nineties, she played the tragic title character based on the singer Selena. The role established her as a singer and actor. Jennifer garnered a lot of attention for her curvy figure. She countered critics by asserting that her figure was a natural gift from her Latin American heritage. At one time, rumours abounded that she had insured her curves for millions of dollars.
The next star to take the world by storm was former Destiny's Child member, Beyonce Knowles. The Destiny's Child group members were all curvy women but Beyonce stood out among them. After the band members split up, Beyonce has become the most successful solo artist among them and has even transitioned to acting in movies. Destiny's Child has a famous song titled 'Bootylicious', which talks about the joy of having a healthy, natural body. The title of the track has even made its way to the dictionary where it is written as a combination of the words 'booty' (buttocks) and 'delicious'. Beyonce has always proclaimed that she is extremely comfortable with her own body and has no regrets whatsoever.
Other pop stars who flaunt their curves with pride include Latin American superstar Shakira and Australian beauty Kylie Minogue. Shakira is proud of her body and claims it helps her belly dancing skills. Kylie Minogue too loves to show off her figure in her videos. She has made it to the 'Sexiest People' list on more than one occasion. A newspaper report once credited her with having the perfect derriere (buttocks), as per a mathematical formula.
Among emerging stars, the person who stands out is Jennifer Hudson. This curvy American Idol contestant went on to co-star in the Oscar-winning movie Dreamgirls for which she won an Academy award. During American Idol, a judge once remarked that she was dressed like a turkey but this gutsy young woman took it in her stride.

Today's celebrity women have proved that you do not have to be thin to be popular. For curvy women, it is all about being natural.
