Your kids should have a proper weight according to their height and age. This is known as BMI or the body mass index. It is a relation between the body weights with the height of the individual, where age also act as one of the variables. Everyone should have a proper body mass index in order to keep healthy.
Obesity is not at all desirable, but having a minimum weight is very important. There are various causes why weight gain is not adequate in kids sometimes. Here are some of the causes explained, have a look.

Illness

Sometimes because of illness, your kid might have lost some weight. This is a sign of weakness. However, if the weight loss is due to the recent illness, then there is nothing much to worry. Because your kid will soon put back the weight once he or she gets well. For that proper diagnosis and proper medication at the right time is of utmost importance. Do not hesitate to consult your doctor if you find any kind of abnormalities in your child’s health.

Not Getting the Proper Nutrition

It is very important for your kids to get the best of nutrition during the first years of their development. Hormone Deficiency

Deficiency of growth hormones can also cause poor weight gain, as the body does not have proper metabolism for the growth and development. So weight gain in kids is inadequate due to hormonal imbalance.

Premature Birth

Kids who are born prematurely tend to have poor weight gain even if they eat well. This is a severe problem but is curable by proper medication and treatment.

Food Intolerances

Some kids may have allergies to certain foods. They cannot be forced to eat such foods in this case. As a result they fail to absorb the proper nutrition thereby slowing down the growth rate. In such cases you need to find out the substitute nutritious foods so that your kid gets the proper nourishment.

Chronic Diseases

Diseases like anaemia, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism etc also inhibit the growth rate in kids. In such cases a proper diagnosis is very important to know the actual cause of poor weight gain and proper treatment should start immediately.

Problems at Home

In some families there exist numerous problems between the parents. As a result the kids suffer. Parents are busy in their own lives, leaving the kids with the care givers and nanny. The caregivers may not be as caring as the parents should be. Kids feel the deprivation of love and warmth from their parents. This creates a mental stress in kids which result in inhibiting the growth rate.

I agree with you hetal, babies should be breastfed at least for six months exclusively and after that solids should be introduced to them.
