Vaginitis or Monilia (Cause of Thrush)

Vaginitis or Monilia (Cause of Thrush)

The incidence of Monilial vaginitis is high during pregnancy and is a result of infection in the vagina due to candida albicans. Get updated about the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment right here.

What is Meant by Vaginitis?

Vaginitis is a vaginal infection that is common in pregnancy. This problem is sometimes also called yeast infection because it is caused by a type of yeast called "Monilia". Its symptoms are itching, burning, and a vaginal discharge (like white cottage cheese).
Monilial vaginitis is also a common problem in those who are suffering from diabetes. This is a kind of infection in the vagina caused by candida albicans that upsets chemical balance in your private parts. This mainly happens when your vagina acidity increases or when your immunity reduces. Again, those relying on high doses of antibiotics may also suffer from the same. You may also suffer from monilial vaginitis with intake of too many vitamins in pregnancy.

Could My Having Vaginitis be Harmful to the Baby?

Yes. Monilia in the vagina can be picked up by the baby during birth and affect its mouth , producing a condition called "thrush" (in the form of a white coating on the baby's mouth and tongue).

Symptoms of Monilial Vaginitis

It is always better to be armed with the right information, especially when you are pregnant. This way you shall be well aware of conditions and factors that might be affecting your unborn child. Take a look at the symptoms commonly associated with monilial vaginitis.
  • Itching of the vulva
  • Pain in vagina
  • Frequent urination
  • Sticky Leucorrhea
  • Redness or swelling around the vulva.
  • You may experience eczema like rashes.
  • Near the clitoris and labia you may find the mucosa thickening.
Around 30% of the women suffering from monilial vaginitis do not get any clinical evidences of the same, which make matters worse for them.

Diagnosis and Treatment Procedures Followed:

It is very important that you inform your doctor in case you experience any or some of the symptoms mentioned above. He shall diagnose you and suggest the right treatment procedure. Take a look at the diagnosis methods followed:
Diagnosis for monilial vaginitis is generally carried out in 3 different ways:

1st Method of Diagnosis

  • The vaginal discharge is collected in a glass sheet and then clinically tested with drops of potassium hydroxide or sodium chloride.
  • The drops are added on the glass sheet and covered.
  • The glass sheet is then tested under a microscope after heating it.
  • While the white blood cells, red blood cells and epithelial cells dissolve fast, you may find the mould as mycelium or linear fibre.
However, you need to be aware that the rate of accuracy is only 60% in this case.

2nd Method of Diagnosis

  • In the second method of diagnosis, the vaginal discharge contained in the glass sheet can be diagnosed with gram stain.
  • The mould can be recognised under the powerful microscopes
  • You can expect 80% accuracy in this case.

3rd Diagnosis Method

This is considered the most reliable method of diagnosis. The Enzyme bacteria culture helps in proper diagnosis of the mould.
Once the diagnosis has been complete, your obstetrician shall offer you creams or suggest you use of suppository that are specific to your condition. Make sure you are following the instructions for use and not applying them more than the number of times specified by him or her. If he or she thinks you need antibiotics as well, he shall suggest the same. Since you need to be extra careful in pregnancy, do not attempt to take the antibiotics by yourself without your obstetrician’s suggestions. It is better to use the antibiotics for a short while. However, your obstetrician shall be the right person to decide this.
Monilial vaginitis can also be treated with the help of Chinese medicines. There are over 50 varieties of herbs available that are known to cure symptoms like pain and swelling. The herbs work by clearing the toxic materials and heat that causes formation of damp promoting growth of bacteria. Since, you may like to avoid medications of any type in pregnancy; these herbal medicines can be a good alternative. However, make sure to have a word with your obstetrician before trying any herbs for some relief.
