Top 10 Things Parents Should Never Do

There is no doubt parents want to do a lot for their kids. However, there are certain things that parents should never do when bringing up children. Read on to learn the top 10 things you should never do to your child.

Parents want to give their child everything they can and sometimes while doing this they go too far and might harm the actual growth of their children, although unknowingly. All parents want the best for their children and they also want the best output from their children. This expectation leads them to do such things that actually harm the internal and external wellbeing of the child.

Top 10 Things Parents Should Avoid Doing

Doing certain things can affect your child’s self esteem as well as hamper his or her development. Here are certain things which you should never do as a parent.
  1. Hitting the Child

There are times when you find that hitting worked to discipline your child, but it has adverse effects in the long run. One of them is that hitting children teaches them to take up the same option later on in life. This will distract the child and prevent him to learn resolving conflicts in effective and humane way.
  2. Yelling at Child

Many parents yell at their children when they do something wrong, knowingly or unknowingly. Remember, yelling will make them grow as an aggressive adults or someone who is shamed and withdraws.
  3. Ignoring the Child

Ignoring your child in any circumstance will increase the problem. If you ignore your child, they will get the same lesson and ignore their peers and others near to them when they grow up. Note that they may even ignore you.
  4. Swearing at Child

Parents who swear at their children increase the risk of bad behaviour and depression in kids. It was even seen that these children lie to their parents and even steal and fight with other children at school.
  5. Comparing Child with Others

High expectations from their kids make parents compare them with others. Even if you want your child to do well, the best way is to motivate him so that he follows the path of a good example.
  6. Criticizing Kids in Front of Others

This is one of the worst things that majority of the parents do. Remember this is emotional abusing and has extreme adverse effects on the personality of your child.
  7. Rejecting Kids

Well, this might sound unbelievable to many of you, but many parents do this, unintentionally. If you refuse hugs to your child, do not allow him to take any decision or choice or physically abandon your child, you are conveying a message of rejection to your child. Healing from this can be really difficult.
  8. Praising Excessively

Most of you might not even distinguish this from praising normally. But if you do not praise your child honestly, you reduce motivation, create insecurity and make them have misplaced focus.
  9. Putting Pressure on Children to Do Well in Exams

Every child is different and has different capabilities. It is good to expect the best from your child, but you should be able to distinguish between healthy pressure and unhealthy pressure.
  10. Bribing Children

Although bribes can be tempting and change your child’s behaviour for the time being, they are not good and healthy for the overall development of your child. It does not teach appropriate skills.

When you are trying to discipline your child, just keep in mind that doing things certain things can have a long term effect on the wellbeing of your child. However yelling, screaming, swearing, threatening or hitting your child is negative no matter what the situation is. Let children know that mistakes are important for growth and they should learn from them. Let children know that you love them and like them as well.

Is it alright to hit or yell at child occasionally? Which things should parents never do to their children? Is it necessary to be lenient with children all the time? Discuss here.
