Things to Do When your Child Makes Mistakes

Things to Do When your Child Makes Mistakes

Instead of getting angry at children for their mistakes it is necessary to correct them. Let us take a look at some things which you can do when your children make mistakes.

It is an obvious fact that children will make mistakes. Even adults make a lot of mistakes, so one should not blame children. Plus, we learn from our mistakes. That is how the saying goes, right? So, in case your kid is making a lot of mistakes, do not go off the handle. Before you let loose those harsh words and pent up anger, read the given points about how to efficiently deal with your child’s mistake.

1. Cut off the Pep Talk

Yep, you read it right. After children make mistakes they do not want to hear stuff like, “it’s okay”, “you did the best you could”, etc. At that point children have a lot of conflicting emotions that need to be channelled.

Whatever you think, a child is not exactly elated after making a mistake. They too feel bad, especially if their mistakes cost them something important. So let your child express their emotions, let them talk. Consolations will not help. Let them deal with their feelings, give them space if they need it.

Do not try to forcefully cheer them up. Encourage them to express and open up to you. Rather tell them how you too made the same mistakes as a child and that it is just a part of life. Give them examples from the lives of famous people. Teach them how they can avoid such mistakes in future.

2. Do Not Compliment Too Much

You know what happens when someone raises you to cloud nine and then puts you right back to the ground? Yeah, it hurts a lot.

Similarly, if you are forever praising your child about every little thing they do and telling them how they are the best or how much you expect from them, mistakes hurt an extra lot. Your child, (thanks to your confidence) feels that they can do anything and are the best. While confidence is good, too much of it is bad.

Even the most confident children make mistakes. Sometimes kids do not realize that and their mistakes make them feel like a loser so they lock themselves up and get completely shatter from inside. Hold the excessive compliments, parents.

3. Encourage to Learn from Mistakes

You must teach your kid how to learn from mistakes. Else they will never get over their grief. Once they have cried out and howled, which is necessary, talk to them about what the mistake has taught them. Tell them inspirational stories where mistakes actually led to success. Discuss ways in which the mistake could have been avoided and work on it from next time.

4. Help to Avoid Fearing Failure

Tell them you love them despite everything. Imbibe in them the impression that failure is not the end of the world. The world is too big to cry over a little bit of spilled milk.

As a parent, it is your responsibility to love them and reduce the shock of their failures. Tell them that no one is perfect, even the Greek gods fail so much. Remind them of the fun they had while doing the particular activity. It is the experience that matters and not the outcome.

5. Teach to Avoid Making Fun of Others

Teach your children to avoid making fun of others who make mistakes. Tell them not to laugh if someone forgets their lines or makes a mistake on the sports field. If everyone else is bullying the child, your kid should stand up for them and help them.

See how you can turn the situation around completely. It is not difficult at all. Your child is going to enjoy life a lot more rather than worry about every mistake they make. They will surely correct their errors and improve every time.

How to react when children make mistakes? What are the ways to help children realize their mistakes? Is it correct to punish children when they make mistakes? Discuss here.
