Travelling During Third Trimester of Pregnancy

Travelling During Third Trimester of Pregnancy

Travelling during pregnancy is often avoided, but if it is necessary, it is advisable to follow the guidelines and specifications offered by an expert or after consulting your doctor. Read on to learn about the precautions you should take while travelling during third trimester so that you and your unborn child is safe.

Many pregnant women are rightfully concerned about the implications of travelling. Though every trimester has its own special category of risks the last trimester is especially vulnerable to complications. In case you have taken the decision to travel during last trimester you should consult with your doctor and then act according to his or her advice. Remember to carry all your vitamins and medication with you when you are travelling. Here are the broad guidelines and specifications which will help you understand and manage travel better when you are in the last phase of your pregnancy.

Air Travel during Pregnancy

In many cases it is medically safe to travel during the third trimester of pregnancy especially if the progression has not gone beyond 36 weeks. However, it is recommended to discuss all travel plans with the doctor-in-charge before making any bookings. In many high risk situations the doctor-in-charge advises pregnant women to stay in their home zone. You can consider not flying if you are under the following situations:
  • You have a condition of multiple pregnancies or are carrying twins.
  • You are suffering from diabetes or high blood pressure.
  • Your placenta is detected to be victim of some abnormality or you have experienced vaginal bleeding.
  • Doctor predicts that you are susceptible to preterm labour.
There are many airlines that prohibit pregnant women in their last month from flying. You will need to check with your air travel provider on that. In case you have a normal pregnancy and have decided to fly then carry a Xerox of the prenatal chart, copies of laboratory tests during pregnancy, medical history and surgical history too.
Under normal circumstances flying in the standard pressurized cabin of a commercial flight is unlikely to cause any problem.

Road Travel

It is highly unadvisable for pregnant women to travel on long bumpy roads to unknown destinations. Short distance Travel to-and-fro from two known cities or towns where medical help is available is ok. The basic thing to remember here is that during pregnancy your body will be vulnerable and you can require medical attention at any stage. So do not expose yourself to unknown terrain. Also do not travel on ill maintained bumpy roads especially if you have been diagnosed as being susceptible to preterm labour.
Always wear a seatbelt while travelling during pregnancy but follow this specific rule while doing it. The shoulder length of the seat belt should be put across your body; preferably between the two breasts. The lap length of the seat belt should be placed under the abdominal area and kept as low as possible on the hips. Keep the seat as far as possible from the steering belt to avoid any accidental contact.
Do not lean forward frequently or suddenly and keep the body firm in its position via the seat belt. This will minimize the risk for car travel during pregnancy. Do not forget to carry all your health documents, prenatal chart, lab reports, doctor’s phone number etc with you once when you are travelling. You never know when you can need this information.

Cruise Travel

If you have never travelled by water before then your pregnancy third trimester is not the ideal time to start. Sea sickness and nausea are common during cruises and you do not want to increase your level of discomfort. Any medication which will prevent nausea will also make you sleepy and groggy. Also, cruises often take up a lot of time and you do not want to be stranded mid sea in case of an emergency situation.
It is always better to be safe during pregnancy, so avoid long distance travel. While travelling during pregnancy, make sure you take all the safety precautions and never travel alone. Always inform your doctor about your travel plans and seek his or her approval before you leave.

Is it safe to travel during third trimester? What are the precautions you should take when air travelling during third trimester? What precautions you should take when travelling on road during third trimester? Discuss here.
