Having a Baby after Age 35

A pregnancy that is conceived after the age of 35 is categorized under high risk pregnancy category. Let us take a look at some facts about having a baby after age 35.

Getting pregnant after the age 35 may not be as easy as it seems. A woman’s fertility starts reducing as she ages and it reduces to a greater extent after she completes 35 years of her age. Getting pregnant after the age of 35 may be difficult but it is not impossible. As the pregnancy after the age of 35 falls in high risk category, lot of precautions are required to be taken.

Is it okay to plan a baby after the age of 35?

One of the main problems of planning a baby later in life is that of conception.  Since the woman's fertility decreases with age, it becomes difficult to get pregnant.  However, once the woman does get pregnant, the chance of the baby being born with Down's syndrome or some other chromosomal defect increases.  In addition, the expectant mother could also develop high blood pressure (especially if overweight), diabetes, and other complications.

What are the chances of my baby getting Down's syndrome?

The older you get, the greater risk you face of having a baby with Down's syndrome (characterized by mental retardation). This risk increases with the mother's age: 1 in 10,000 for 20-year-old mothers, 3 in 1000 for 35-year-old mothers, and 3 in 100 (3%) for 40-year-old mothers.

How to improve the chances of conception after the age of 35?

Chances of getting pregnant after the age of 35 are low but it is not impossible to get pregnant at this age. By following right lifestyle, the chances of conception can be boosted to a greater extent. If pregnancy is planned at this age, a woman must quit all her bad habits like drinking, smoking, taking drugs etc. At the same time, it is important to make sure that periods are regular. Once the periods are regular, it will easier to determine the most fertile days based on the length of the menstrual cycle. Doing an intercourse on the most fertile day is very crucial for improving the chances of conception.

Apart from the above mentioned things, exercising regularly, maintaining right weight and including fertility boosting foods in the diet can help a lot in boosting the chances of pregnancy. Practising yoga can also help in improving the chances of conception. It is also very important that a woman takes care of mental and emotional health along with her physical health in order to improve the chances of conception after age 35.

Poor sperm count and other issues in men can also affect the chances of pregnancy which must be checked in case if difficulty is faced while planning a pregnancy.

What kind of complications can be observed?

Late pregnancy are characterised by many complications. The chances of miscarriage are high when pregnancy is conceived after the age of 35. Therefore, a lot of care must be taken. There is a risk of ectopic pregnancy in such cases. Premature birth is also one of the complications that can occur in case of the pregnancy that is conceived after the age 35. Other complication like high blood pressure and gestational diabetes are also very common in late pregnancies. Problems like oligohydramnios (low amniotic fluid) or placenta previa can also occur.

If you are planning to have a baby after the age 35, you must strictly follow the precautions suggested by your doctor. By following a healthy lifestyle, taking precautions and monitoring the pregnancy continuously and closely, it is possible to give birth to healthy babies even after the age of 35.
