Care should be taken to keep the weight in check and ensure that the mother retains an weight that is ideal for a successful pregnancy and giving birth to a baby who will grow up healthy too.

The moment you decide that you are looking forward to pregnancy, you should consult your doctor on the steps you ought to take in order to keep healthy and maintain a healthy weight. After all, we all know that obesity can give rise to major complications during conception and also during the pregnancy term.

Factors that Make Weight Loss very Important

How does the mother get affected even before conception - According to studies, around 64% of women are found to suffer from overweight or obesity issues. Obesity not only comes in the way of keeping healthy but enhances the risk of developing a wide array of health problems that can in turn negatively affect the reproductive well-being of the woman. There can be issues related to diabetes, increased blood sugar levels, rise in blood pressure, kidney issues, irregular periods and other associated fertility factors.

Effects of Obesity on Baby

Even after the baby is conceived, the mother’s obesity can sway the development and growth of the baby. The baby can be born with diabetes, get clogged arteries due to the high sugar content in the mother’s blood and develop other serious birth defects including physical disabilities that might prove to be untreatable or fatal for him in his later life.

Harmful Effects of Being Overweight

Let us now check in brief how baby can get affected if the mother is overweight.

Birth Defects –

Neural tube defects are the most common one to be found in babies born to obese mothers. The spine and the brain development gets affected as these two organs do not get the adequate nourishment and thereby result in spina bfida. Obesity curbs the natural folic acid production in the mother’s body, which is so very important for the developing fetus. So, not only the mother needs to ensure that she maintains a healthy weight but also take supplementary folic acid as per the instructions of her doctor.

Diabetes and Caesarean Delivery –

These two are more often than not interlinked. It is very natural for obese women to develop diabetes and such mothers are rarely able to go for the healthy normal delivery. Caesarean is the only option for giving birth and the issue here is, there can be multiple other associated complications that can suddenly arise during labour and birth.

Sometimes the complications arise all of a sudden and result in a delicate and fatal situation for both the mother and the baby. Besides, there is always the risk of miscarriage at any moment of the pregnancy term. Another point, obese women with diabetes and with or without high blood pressure is more likely to go into a preterm labour and the chances of an underdeveloped baby being born are also pretty high.

If you are already overweight and planning to conceive, it is advisable that you consult your doctor so that you can be guided through a weight loss routine. You can attain the ideal weight that would aid in an easy conception and healthy birth. Remember, like always, a crash diet will not suffice. A mother needs to be healthy and fit in order to give birth to a healthy child. So follow the directives of your doctor and nutritionist as they provide you with a diet chart that will take into account all the necessary requirements of protein, carbs, fiber, essential vitamins and supplements.
