Sorting your Baby's Laundry

Sorting your Baby

Sorting out the clothes, ease out the cleaning process. Baby's clothes are very dirty and sometimes soiled also, so sorting them eases out the washing process. Here are some tips on how to sort the clothes. Read on.

There are all kinds of tiny little clothes, what should I do?

The experts call for separating clothes into whites, pastels, colourfast brights and darks and then separating them again into lightly soiled and heavily soiled. This makes eight tiny loads of laundry, so most mothers combine at least some of those categories. The essential rule is
  • Keep the 'faders' and really grubby clothes away from the white, light and delicate items which may actually pick up dirt if they rub shoulders with their grimier neighbours.
  • When you are sorting, gather up tiny items like baby booties and put them in mesh bags so they will be less likely to get lost.

How should I wash clothes of older babies and toddlers?

Clothes of older babies that get put into the regular family wash should be checked as you would your own. All these things will seem very time-consuming if you do them while you are standing over a washing machine, so you may want to get in the habit of making these adjustments when you undress your child.
  • Turn pockets inside out (particularly important when you have a toddler who stuffs things into them);
  • Turn down cuffs and brush away any loose dirt; zip up zippers and hook hooks to prevent getting them stuck in the machine or with other clothes.
  • To keep corduroy crawlers from getting lint on them, turn them inside out. Do the same for items that are embroidered or appliquéd, so the decorations won't get snagged.

Some more tips for sorting your baby’s laundry

When it comes to sorting clothes of your baby, here are some pointers that you may keep in mind. Take a look:

Sort by the weight of the fabric

When you are sorting clothes, colour is not the only consideration that you need to keep in mind. Weight of the garment too is an important factor that needs to be measured. If you have plenty of heavy cotton pants, it will be wise if you do not wash them with thin t-shirts. Washing the heavy clothes with the light weight ones may cause rip or tear in those which are not very strong. Also, when clothes of different weights are put in the dryer, you must not expect all of them to dry equally well. To make things simple, it is always better to separate the lighter ones from the heavier varieties.

Taking care of stained clothes

It may not be that all your baby's clothes require the same attention for stain removal. Once you have sorted the clothes based the highly soiled ones from the relatively cleaner ones, you may spray the stain removing soaps on the hard stains. In very bad cases, you may have to soak the clothes in a bucket of soap and water.

Quickly sort the laundry

You will be making a mistake to think sorting laundry shall be a daunting task. In fact you can use a laundry sorter too if you need. If you have the habit of washing once in a week, you may dump all the clothes together and then sort before putting them into the machine. However, the strategy that might work for the empty nesters may not be suitable for a young mother.
If you feel most of the clothes of your newborn are light in shade, you may want to wash them all together. However, it is advisable that you keep the bed sheets, covers and towels separate from the clothes.
When you have sorted the laundry,it becomes easier for you to choose washing cycles. You can also choose different temperature for washing. Sorting also ensures colours do not bleed into the other garments. So, go ahead and divide the clothes wisely.

Sorting baby's laundry is a huge task but it is really useful in the long run. Sort them first like daily use, then woollen should be kept separately. Then comes the t-shirts and shirts that should be put in a different shelf and pants should be in another shelf. This will make your life a lot more easier.

as soon as thse the potential stain hits the garment - coat it with spray & wasp and you can leave it until you have time to clean it - stain usually comes out!

please note that using a fabric softner on infants sleepwear is no longer recommended because the softner removes the flame resisitant coating on infant sleepwear.
